Hi, My name is Christy and I'm from In. I'm 30 and want to be a RN. I dont know where to start and would like some advice. I'm also very nervous about going back to school. I feel if I know what I'm getting into it'll ease my mind. Any advice?

Check with your local community college or University.

I am a proud mother of three beautyful daughter. I currently live in Los Angeles California. I've worked as a heathecare provider for almost 10 years. I am curently in school to pursue my MSN in nursing, and wants to work as a pediactric nurse, in public health.

Some schools require you to have your CNA cert's first, also have to have BLS-CPR&AED cert's...you will have to be up to date on all immunizations..Hep a&b,tetnus, and tb.are the main ones............good luck..

tsa_momma: Hey, go for it. So what if you are 30. I went back to school at 40. Then went back again, then went back again. And, I am now 58 and thinking of going on for PhD. You can do it. Start with gathering information on schools. If you are very nervous, start out with just one course or two. You will surprise yourself with how well you will do.

I am 32 and I am almost finished with my RN program.  And believe me I am not the oldest.  In fact in my last class I was 2nd to the youngest.  Age does not matter.  I enjoyed my last clinical because I had so much more in common with students my age and older than I ever do with the 18 and 19 year olds.

tsa_momma -

Just stay loyal to your hopes and goals. I don’t believe any nurse can be a ‘fair-weathered-one’ where at one instance it sounds good at the time and then at another moment’s notice change your mind.  I hid behind working in other occupations and the desire to become a nurse keeps coming back.  I am working on my prereqs and I know that it will take a lot of patience to get through everything academically (and also balance a family).  My mom was a nurse and my brother has been one since his early 20s, he is now in his mid 40s. He likes working in the OR because he doesn’t have to deal with patients who are in the waking state nor does he have to deal with families of patients. It is also my mom and bro’s first profession whereas; nursing will be my 2nd career.  I don't regret not starting earlier because I think now that at age 38, I can appreciate the nursing field more now than ever.  Working weekends or holidays also doesn't bother me anymore.  You’re never too old.  Just don’t lose the desire.  Good luck to you.

hi tsa-momma. first: ask yourself why you want this and how badly you want this and if you can justify this question for yourself, i believe you can be able ot finish and become a nurse even with all the difficulties that comes with it. good luck!

TSA-Momma,   Talk to  a nurse to see if you have a good idea of what a nurse really does.  Then check out local colleges.  Check their costs.  I would suggest attending IN.'s Ivy Tech for your pre-reqs. They are cheaper , but it is hard to get into their nursing program.  Allso make sure their credits will transfer to another college of your choice.  Take one or two classes at a time..work your way into it.  You'll be fine!!

Don't worry about your age. When I was in nursing school 30 years ago, there were 4-5 ladies 40 or over in my group. I was 21 and the majority of the rest were 17-20. Believe me, the older ladies were the most diligent students in the group. They had been nurse aides, and LPN's and were paying their own way. They were determined to get through it and worked harder than any of the rest of us. Age is not the determining factor of success. I'm still considering returning to school part time. This time for something different, womens studies, Appalachian studies or even chef.    A few years ago I took an elective class and many of the students in the class were from my daughter's high school graduating class. At first it felt funny, but as it went on I realized I had an important part to play in the class. When we talked about the VietNam war, I could relay my memories of it on TV every night at supper. They had barely even heard of it. SO, keep up the good work. We old nurses need replacements sooner or later. Someone needs to take care of US!

I've  known for years I want to be a nurse.  I'm a stay-at -home mom so I am the "nurse" of my family. My grandma was diagnosed with emphysema several years ago. Until  she passed away in Jan. 2007,  the past 5-6 yrs have been the worse. I was the one at the hospital everyday or at the nursing home most of the time. Than my accident prone husband got burnt, than a staph infectionn and I was there for all of that, my  2 oldest kids take after their father (need I say more), and my latest and still on going "nursing job" is my 1 year old son. Hes had issues since birth and hopefully are coming to an end soon. The poor thing passed on me 4 times and was on a ventilator in the pediatric icu for almost 2 months. I've learned alot through out all that and more. Nursing is my passion.  The more hands-on I get, the more I love it. I've even talked to a  family friend thats been a nurse since the late 70's. She has told me alot of things I can learn now not being in school. Right now I'm working on learning the 206 bones of the adult body. I'm  so excited about going back to school .

I have been accepted to IVY Tech. I ve done almost everything I need to do before my entrance exam. but I have a question. I've been advised to take a math, english and writng class before I take the exam. Is it highly recomended or is it something I should wait until after the exam to do?

I did not take any classes and passed the entrance exam with no problem.  I really don't think it's necessary unless you really are POOR in your math skills. Maybe you can review basic algebra with someone who is a math wiz. LOL

As far as taking a english or math class before the exam.  I never did but I had strong math and english skills.  I think it depends on how comfortable you are with your ability in those subjects.  There is definetly alot of math in nursing school.  The reason for the test is to see where you are at in these subjects.  If you are at a point in which they can just jump in and start showing you more then you pass.  If you are missing a piece of the puzzle then you would fail. Seriously you need to evaluate your own skills and decide.  Regardless if you think  you are strong in these subjects and end up failing the test then just take a class and then retest.

I did not study for my entrance exam.  I just took it because I did not know there were books that you could study from to take that exam.  I had just finished my bachelors in another area so all of the math and english was still semi-fresh in my mind.  So if you feel nervous check out your nearest library, Borders etc and pick up a nursing school entrance exam book.
