Posted almost 6 years ago This debate has been going on for awhile now - through several presidential elections, and I'm sure it will be alive in well in 2008. I'm interested in what nurses' opinions are on the subject? Are you in favor or against the use of embryonic stem cells to treat diseases and disabilities? Check out this article for more information on stem cells. |

| Posted almost 6 years ago I'm sorry, but I am biased.. being a person with a spinal cord injury who could benefit greatly from this research.. so yes, I am in favour.. I am also in Canada, so it may be a little different here in the end. Talk about opening a can of worms.. |

| Posted almost 6 years ago I'm pretty religious - and sorry Marieke, but I think using adult stem cells should suffice. What if they start cloning like in the movie Coma? I think Bush screwed up with Iraq, but he's right on this one. It would open up a whole big can of worms that we just could never handle. |

| Posted almost 6 years ago Any method that is reasonable and alleviates human suffering should be utilized. I consider cell therapy a reasonable method. |

| Posted almost 6 years ago I agree with lindasue. While I understand your concern KPetro, it really is purely ignorant of you to say that Bush is right on this one. Don't you think the federal government would be more likely to prevent unethical cloning if it were actually involved? The way it is now embryonic stem cells are being used by private entities anyway. Maybe I am shocked that anyone is saying that Bush is right about anything - I guess you are part of the 25% huh? |

| Posted almost 6 years ago NevadaRN - i'm not ignorant, and I don't agree with the pres on most things, but this one is a sacred issue. Sure maybe he's only been doing it to rile up his base, but I do agree. Please don't question my motives! |

| Posted almost 6 years ago I think that NevadaRN is not ignorant, ignorance can be cured! Stupidity is apparently her major problem. I disagree with GW Bush on EVERYTHING. I lived in Austin, Texas for 13 years and believe me, the man just doesn't have a clue.

| Posted over 5 years ago G.W. aside human lives are beig wasted while the politicians endlessly debate the merits of stem cells use to cure diabetes, spinal cord injury and the like. What amazes me is that all this debate goes on while unused embryos are being destroyed on a daily basis. cclower opines the "murder of innocents". Would she rather that these unimplanted embryos be just destroyed ? Would it not be better to use these innocents to improve the life of the those "here present" ? G.W Has been dead wrong on every major avenue he has stuck his nose into. Why is the issue of stem cells be any diffrent ? After all how can somebody rail against stem cell use and say nothing about the almos 6,000 killed in Iraq. 6,000 dead of our youngest and best and people are "up in arms" about the destruction of embryos which will probably die any way if left in Liquid Nitrogen.

| Posted over 5 years ago I agree with Henry about the hypocrisy of the whole situation, and I fail to see how KPetro can agree with anything that comes out of George Bush's mouth. |

| Posted over 5 years ago this issue comes down to personal beliefs and the debate will be around just as long as the abortion debate has been around. with that said no one belief is right or wrong, which leads me to believe that a perfect answer/common ground will never be, just like with abortion. will it be completely legal without all the run around? yes, probably as soon as a democrat is elected. Personally, I believe stem cell research could benefit medicine, particularly brain/SCI conditions tremendously. However, people that believe it is murder or inhumane are very dear to their convictions and have religious or ethical beliefs as to why it is immoral. so, we need to take these feelings into consideration instead of just saying that people against stem cell research are wrong. And just because we may have the means and it will benefit us does not mean we must engage in the activity. some things are just better left alone. Doctors/researchers are not GODs or super natural beings, nor should they try to be. |

| Posted over 5 years ago I'm all for embryonic stem cells to treat diseases. My concern is when you start something as wide open as this- some people will take liberties with it and take it to a whole different level. While I don't feel we should play God, I do feel that God gave us intelligence and we should use that whenever and wherever possible. As for George Bush-he stinks! |

| Posted over 5 years ago It seems like this conversation over stem cells trailed a bit to a George Bush bash. I voted for him because to me it was picking the less of two evils. About the stem cells why don't they take the unused or unsaved cords from mothers that have just given birth? Wouldn't that be the better solution. That would elimate the abortion factor and help find more and better cures for certain disease. Mothers can freeze the cords incase a problem arises later in life so why not use those that are not being used. I agree with georgianurse about other's beliefs. No one is wrong or right they are passionate of what they believe. I also do not think anyone is stupid or ignorant, just because they believe something different does not constitute saying that. |
