Most of us nurses consider ourselves patient advocates. I feel that I am always looking out and fighting for my patient's interests. What can we do on a daily basis to advocate for our patients? Is their more we can do? I know if we brainstorm there will be things that someone else will bring up that maybe we have not thought about.

If you are in the medical field then it's part of your job to be a pt. advocate. Sometimes you're all a pt. has to speak up for them!

a lot of times, patients just do not know the right questions to ask.

How many times have I started a conversation with "You know, you have some options here to think about ..."

Patients really appreciate that. Many times they feel that they just have to accept what the doctor is telling them. The patient does not know what they don't know. A nurse can help them to make those informed decisions.

guess I would add, sometimes you have to really raise hell to get things done!  Once you get over the fear of doing that, it gets easier. I would rather have a doctor mad at me than see a patient make a choice that they will regret.

Sometimes I am accused of being a little mouthy.

Being a pt's advocate is a major role in nursing. Nurses have to be assertive, and may come off too foward. It all depends  on the way you present it, but there will still be times, where you seem pushy. As long as you are doing it in the pt's best interest, presenting it the right way, and doing what is right, that is all that matters. There are many times we advocate for the pt and or their families and they do not even realize it, it is all about educating and improving...
