Have You Ever Heard of Newborns Overdosing on Codeine?

Posted almost 6 years ago The FDA recently warned nursing mothers to beware of the amount of codeine they take because it may cause harm to their newborns if the dosage is too high. Has anyone ever heard of this sort of tragedy occurring? What do you think the best solution is? |

Posted almost 6 years ago I have not heard of this at all. How many nursing mothers take codeine so regularly and frequently that this becomes a problem? Codeine should be used on a short term basis (for most) so I think it may have stemmed from misuse on the mother's part. However, I am saying this without reading the entire article.

Posted almost 6 years ago Oh, here's another thought: don't prescribe codeine to breastfeeding mothers. There are alternatives such as vicodin or percocet for postpartum pain.

Posted almost 6 years ago Personally, I think that nursing mothers should lay off of medication altogether. There are too many risks involved to warrant the need.

Posted almost 6 years ago While this is true, "there are too many risks involved to warrant the need." many people MUST take meds for various other ailments/illnesses and cannot necessarily be OFF meds completely, whether it be for pain or orther. In that case it is important to find the med that does the least harm or is thought to do the least harm if any.

Posted almost 6 years ago Well obviously in post-surgical situations you need to take pain killers, but people must be very very aware. My concern comes from a real distrust of the pharmaceutical companies - it's probably different in Canada Marieke, but we have strong interests peddling anything that can go down someones throat. Patients and nurses MUST be cognizant of that. Nursing mothers especially should be because they are passing any side effects to their babies.

Posted almost 6 years ago I am not talking about post-surgical patients. MANY people have pain from neuro disorders or injuries. They are not well controlled with opiate type drugs and must take meds daily to be able to function. I too see that pharm companies are pushing pills more and more, and it is the same in Canada. Andyes, I agree, nursing mothers need to be aware of what they may be pasisng to their babies BUT on the flip side, if the patient truly needs meds they should not deny themselves for fear that it can hurt the baby IF the drup is said to be 'safe' for nrusing mothers. Of course if the med is not safe for nursing motehrs, then, NO don't take it, try to find an alternative. But is it dangerous to have a sleep-deprived (more so) mother, who is in pain and may lose her temper faster/more easily due to this as well. They will NOT be safe to be around their child if the pain is too intense and they cannot look after their child, or worse do something to the child out of shear frustration.. (ok off my soap box and I've gone a bit off-topic). Anyhow, yes I see your point, but please don't forget to see the flip-side.

Posted almost 6 years ago Exactly - some of us need meds. I had knee surgery last year. I don't know what I would have done without morphine.

Posted almost 6 years ago NevadaRN, same here. Without my daily meds I cannot function. I use meds for neuro pain and spasticity, If I decide to have children then will have to re-evaluate what I can take, but I know the importance of taking care of yourself to be able to care for others.

Posted almost 6 years ago I have not heard of this. I think women should take into consideration what might happen, or should I say what could happen in the future . I agree that some of us need meds, but if you take meds, why breast feed?
