Does anyone have experience caring for patients with Parkinson's disease? What was your experience and what are the best techniques? Check out the article, "Parkinson's Disease Overview" for background information on the disease.

I work in the Nuerology Clinic at UT Southwestern in Dallas. We have 3 clinics 1 for MS, 1 for MDA and 1 for everything else. We have 2 wonderful Drs that work with Parkinson's pts. I didn't get to do much more than vitals and taking them to their room. We had to do orthstatic BP which was a little difficult to get some of these pts on the bed to get the one lying down but I did learn that when taking their BP (if they shake a lot) hold that arm firmly but gently. Also if they are standing they could always put their hands behind them and lean back onto something (but not sitting down). Some can get very frustrated when they get to the point where they have to have help, you could try to tell them that it is policy that you do certain things to help for safety reasons. That helps sometimes but not all. Hope this helps. I haven't worked in very many clinics but being here in neurology I have worked with pts with Parkinson's to MDA to stroke to Down's to MS (where I am now). I have loved every minute of it and has come in real handy now considering I have a granddaughter that has Down's.
