For those of you who are already nurses....

What were your career goals when you were in nursing school? Did you have a particular specialty in mind? I know I've changed my mind about where my career was going about a dozen times (I think I changed my major 4 times in college!), but how have your career goals changed over time? I'm eager to hear how your plans changed because we never know where life is going to take us!

I have been a nurse for 30 years and have had several changes thru out my career.  I have worked in peds, urology, ICU and right now with med sur pts.  I think change is good for some nurses.  It is always a chance to learn something new.  When you are exposed to a different floor or area, you are going to learn something.  It may not be what you expected but you will learn.  I am considering end of life nursing next.  Of course that could change to something else as I explore my options. Don't close you mind to other options.  I see many nurses who say "I work only with" a certain area/type of patient.  I think that is why you see so much burn out on a unit.  Most people don't like change but I think if you are in a medical field, you should expect change and try to roll with the flow.

I completely agree - I don't think anyone should limit themselves to one kind of nurisng. You never know what will appeal to you in the future. The healthcare field has  undergone so many developments in recent years, I am sure this has had some sort of affect on career goals.

Emergency/trauma nursing is what I wanted to do before, during and after school.  I have not had the desire to do otherwise.  One of the benefits of this field is I have to know how to take care of any type of pt / complaint combo that rolls through.

When I went for LPN I always wanted to work in surgery.  That was my big dream.  I ended up working on a med/surg floor.  Then when I was 9mos pregnant I suddenly went for an interview working in a different hospital's ER.  I got the job and hated it.  I knew why I hated it and it was the hospital not the ER.  I had stayed at the other hospital prn and they were asking me to come back full time because they needed people with experience, so I did.  Well one day I was floated to the ER and I absolutley loved it.  I wrote the head of ER and asked her to consider me even though I was an LPN.  The staff loved having me also so they also gave me a good reccommendation.  I got the job went on to get my RN and have been there for about 6 years now.  I know that one day I may want to try something else but for right now I am still being challenged in many different ways.  I precept for a nursing school- take their student for 24 hours clinical time and have them take care of patients.  They have even asked me to think about being a clinical instructor for the school.  I am also in charge of all scheduling and vacations at work and do some precepting of the new employees so we will see where nursing takes me.
