in my opinion on this one, i think you have to call the California BON again and ask them if they really need a copy of your license from the Philippines or a letter of explanation why you don't have one is sufficient enough. i graduated last march '08 from the Philippines and i took my NCLEX already last december, and i didn't have any problems regarding the eligibility to take it. BUT, before i applied, i've been hearing about this issue that the BON is requiring a local license already. and still i took the risk, i sent my application and wrote them an explanation why i did not take the local board exam in the philippines, which i just stated that i was a US citizen and i had to get back here in the US. within 2 months i got my ATT. i guess the best thing is to really inquire with the California BON, i think they are getting strict when it comes to foreign nurses, if my info is right, there are only 2 states that are allowing foreign graduates to take the NCLEX without license from the country they graduated from, and that is Vermont and California. and i heard that in the Philippines, it is a requirement to take and pass the local exam to be able to take NCLEX (keep in mind that they are sending their application too to the CA BON). Hope i can help, and for those that will be taking their NCLEX, good luck.... |

here's an info on what you need as a foreign graduate to be a candidate to take the NCLEX-RN exam in the state of california. copied from http://www.rn.ca.gov/applicants/lic-exam.shtml
as you can see in this forum, there's a lot of misunderstanding on whether a foreign graduate needs to have a license from the country where he/she graduated from in order to take the NCLEX in california. there is some sort of a "loop hole" or rules that is not written anywhere, and the only time you'll find out is when you submit your application to the California BON and that they are requiring you for other documents, such as your license in the country where you graduated from. and in the above requirements that they are asking you is a copy of your license OR diploma, NOT a copy of your license AND diploma. i hope this info can help, i know i can't directly answer your question in a simple manner of YES or NO, i wish i can, and i guess the only way you'll find out is when you file your application to the California BON. i wish you luck! |

valid reason? well i'm not sure what you mean by it, but why don't you tell them about your current situation. when i sent my application i included the letter already why i don't have a license, which is that i am a citizen and that i have to get back in the states, and also i said that i am not able to take the exam because it was only scheduled twice a year which is june and november (i came back july), i wasn't able to take the june board because i was still completing my requirements. so with your case, as i said just tell them your situation. |

| Posted over 4 years ago HI there! Those Filipino-American citizens who studied in the Philippines and took the NCLEX in the US, did you take up LPN/LVN (12-mth coueaw) or RN (2yr course term) or BSN(4 yr. course term) in the Phils.? I'll greatly IN appreciate if you could give me names of school you graduated from so I'll have an idea where to find a legitimate LPN or RN program in the Phils. MANY THANKS AND GOD BLESS! |

You can try California or Vermont. California only requires a written explanation for immigrants or U.S. citizens if they don't intend to practice the Philippines. |

I just wrote that I didn't have my license because my re-entry to go back to the U.S. was going to expire before the exam date in the Philippines. I also sent a copy of my re-entry ang passport with it. You're welcome! God bless you too! |

| Posted about 4 years ago Fret, I'm not a US citizen as well. However, I am an immigrant and that's my reason why I don't have to take the exam there. The best thing to do is to call the CA BON. Ask them if they would require you to have your license first in the Philippines before you can apply for the exam. I can't say really on what to do in your situation but to inquire first. If they only require a written explanation, good for you then... You're welcome! |

if you are taking the NCLEX here in california, there might be a possibility that the BON would not require you to have your local board exam. BUT if you are taking the exam in the Philippines, you really need to take the local board first and have your license before you can take the NCLEX. |
