| Posted almost 5 years ago Pediatric pts.who are HIV positive are like any other ped. pt. except you have one advantage..you know that they are positive. Treaat all pts. wwith standard precautions and yoou will be just fine!! Trust me, I haave worked with many HIV pts. and I treat them the same and so should you. If you aare scared, find a new career because AAIDS is a fact of our world now. If you treat them with fear then you are doing more harm to them than help. Cindy Arnold,RN

| Posted almost 5 years ago HIV is a fact of life, fortunately AIDS has been somewhat curbed, but there is always a possibility HIV can develope into AIDS. As was stated previously Standard Precautions, which should be utilitized with all patients is the norm. HIV postive patients have far more of a chance becoming ill from staff and visitors than they have becoming HIV positive. If you are coughing and or sneezing, regardless if you think it's allergies, you should wear a clean mask every time you come in contact with HIV patients or any patient with autoimmune deficiencies. Stay home if you're ill. Be diligent with handwashing. This is a pathogen which requires direct sexual contact, blood, feces, urine and mucous contaminations. You have to have an open wound, scratch, cut etc and come in contact with the contaminants. In other words, if your own personal barrier the skin is broken, be smart and use standard precautions, even if it's only casual contact and no contaminants are involved. During the height of the AIDS epidemic, I did lots of volunteer work in San Francisco, taking care of middle to end stage patients with AIDS. Always used gloves and protective gowns when cleaning up. only ever used gloves to casually touch if I had cuts on my hands. |

| Posted almost 5 years ago Just don't get stuck with an infected needle and you should be fine, good hand washing is all you need, you do not need gloves for non invasive procedures. Aids and HIV patients are shunned as it is because people are scared and ignorant, just use good hand washing good technique and you will be fine. A busy RN is here |
