My accupuncturist said I have an imbalance of Omega 3's vs 6's. He said its why my allergies are so bad. Can't find any info on 6's--just3's. Anyone have tips on what foods I need to be avoiding?

Did your accupunturist do a lipid profile? Omega 6's will displace 3's, but it is seldom an issue if you eat a healthy and balanced diet. I f you belive that your accupuncturist's VISUAL diagnosis (wich cannot be done by an MD or Nutritionist/RD) then you should shy away from olive and peanut oil as they are slightly higher in 6. Cold water fish are higher in 3, and mercury. Flax seeds (whole not oil) are the best bet. They contain the correct proportion (4:1 if I remember correctly) of 3:6, in addition to the fiber Lingans. Omega 3, or Linolenic Acid, is the only fat that your body cannot synthesize. But it should be stated that it is abundant and seldom an issue in a balanced diet. If you genuinely belive your deficient I would talk to your GP about it, they can do the proper tests to determine if you need supplimental fats in your diet.

Thanks!! I use olive oil in most of my cooking--trying to stay away from the veg and corn oils!! I know that I hardly ever eat fish. I have a thing about textures!! Working 3-11 def is not conducive to a balanced eating schedule. Doesn't flax seeds make you go poo though?

The ideal Omega 3 to Omega 6 balance is 1:3. Most Americans have a 1:20 ratio. DO NOT WORRY ABOUT GETTING ENOUGH OMEGA 6s. FOCUS ON OMEGA 3s. Most foods today in restaurants or that are packaged contain massive amounts of Omega 6 fats.

I found this on the internet to give you some ideas:

Omega-3s (100g) (g)

Flax / Linseed oil 58

Flax / Linseeds 15-30

Walnut Oil 11.5

Canola / Rapeseed oil 7

Soybean oil 7

Wheatgerm oil 5

Yes that's what I was taught in Nutrition class that the OMEGA 3s are good, the Linolenic Acids found in fish. We have to get a way from alot of Saturated fats in our diets.
