Posted almost 5 years ago I just posted this under the Careers forum but I am putting it here too to get more exposure. Here's my story.................
At the end of 2005 I was in a severe car accident. Fractured many bones (R tib/fib, R knee cap, several ribs, L collar bone, and lastly a C-2 fracture) a year later I fell and broke my L hip and femur, and in June of 2008 I broke my L wrist. I now walk with a cane and have many issues with balance and falling. I want to go back to work but I don't know where to turn to find a job I can do. Do to my loss of income I lost my home and moved to SC from NY, then to NC and now am planing to move to either TX or FL. Is there anyone who can advise me what type of nursing job I could do now. I used to work in corrections both in the prison ER and the Infirmary, and was there for 10 years. I am 59 years old and just became a nurse in 1997 (associate's degree). I need serious help in finding a nursing position because I am not ready to turn in the towel. If anyone has any suggestions to help me out I would greatly appreciate it. |

| Posted almost 5 years ago Well I think it is probably time to think about nursing in a different capacity. Try the insurance companies- they need nurses for many things. My friend even works from home. The best think is she can almost work anywhere because the company she works for has offices in most states. Also try lawyers. They need nurses to put the charts together and see what is missing. What about school nursing? I know it would be a big change from working with prisoners but not as demanding and you could sit down more as needed. The car companies- ford-chevy, also use nurses in their plants and they pay really great. Also look into other big companies sometimes if the company is really big they may have a clinic for their employees. Check the hospitals out also they may need a clinic nurse for their own employees. |

| Posted almost 5 years ago bits78 is right-there are alot of options as nurses. Working from home sounds like it might be your best bet. Scheduling home health visits would be one option. Also a job where you sit instead of walk, such as phone triage nurse would be good. I worked as an Intake coordinator for 2 1/2 years, taking home health referrals over the phone and ordering medical equipment. It required a LPN or RN for the postion. Quality review in hospitals, checking charts. You need to change your perspective. Look in other avenues of nursing. They are out there, you just have to look. Good Luck |
