Hi, I just recently completed a CNA program through the red cross in michigan. I have been taken classes for the last 4 years towards my nursing degree. I have 2 classes to complete before I can apply for the nursing program. I was just told there is a LPN program being offered at one of the program where you can become a medical assistant like a vocational school. I can get in this program in Sept of this year and go for 1 year and become a LPN. NOw if I decide to go for RN I will not likely get in until next year in Sept. One question I have is how much do a LPN make? I have a part time job working as a Ward secretary making 14.00 dollars a hour is that how much a LPN make to start off???? Should I just wait I have heard that LPN are not in a great demand like RN. WHen I checked job opening in the local hospital they mostly want RN. If anyone can answer any of these questions for me i will appreicate it.

| Posted almost 5 years ago My advice is if you can go for your RN I would just go straight for that. I however did not have that luxury and needed to work full time while I went to school. I was a ward secretary just like you. So I went for LPN. I then went and got my RN. The amount of time spent doing it I would have just done it straight off if I could have afforded it. Many places do hire LPN's but you have more options as an RN. As an LPN I lucked into many of the jobs I had- mainly being at the right place at the right time. I was hired into a ER that was going to incorporate LPN's into their staffing. It wasn't really working out so I went back to my old job and while there was floated to the ER one night and they hired me on the spot for a position down there- again I was one of the first LPN's they had hired me to see how I would work out and then they hired many others after that. I did like that ER and am still there as an RN now. |

| Posted almost 5 years ago I"m a LPN now. I worked in an office where I didn't even make that much after 5 years of working there, but the benefits were better. I have an interview with a private duty agency where they start out at $18.00 an hour. LTC facilities are always looking for LPNs. My advice is if you like what you do now stick with it and get your RN. It'll be more money in the long run. Utimately it's your decision. Follow your gut instinct. |
