I can not find any grants or scholarships for the adult or vocational schools.   The cost for the LVN program at the local adult school here in Fresno CA, is about  $2,000.00.  But what about surviving monthly???  I need and extra 1000 per month.  I am falling between several cracks.  To top it off, I am 49 and have been married for 28 years, my children are all in their 20's and my husband makes desent money but not enough to cover all the bills while I am in school.

Any Ideas for extra money?  I hate to refinance the house this close to retirement or touch my 401K.

Help!!!

I am a recent graduate (LPN), from Louisiana.  I was funded through a state program (Work Connection).  It took quite a bit to get started, they required so much paper work.  But it was well worth it.  They even paid for my testing fees.  So my suggestion would be to start with trying to see what your state has to offer.  Just call around!

That's a great idea that I had forgotten about! Going to the local unemployment office to get financing! I remember now that many offices offer funding, but there is quite a bit of red tape to go through. If you truely want to become an LVN, then I would suggest calling or stopping in to the local office. If they do not offer financial help they may be able to refer you to other sources! Good luck!

I never would have thought to check there for funding.

I'll keep that ion mind for when I am ready to get going.  I'm just getting started with my CNA and want about a year under my belt before going further with my career.  LPN is definitely the way I want to go though.

Thanks for the input.  I have my CNA licence but my back does not agree.  If my back was better, some of the SNF will help you to become a LVN.

I got funding through the Employment Security Commission-a program called WIA, the work investment act I think?  Anyway, basically, they give me money to go to school and then I have to keep in contact with them for  a while after graduation to see if I'm still working as a nurse and where and so on.  It's basically a work retention study.  I also qualified for a Pell and so when WIA pays my fees, I get my Pell money back-extra money to live on.  I also work three days a week.  One at a local doctors office and both weekend days at a grocery store.  I spend the other 4 days in school.  There are also private loans-such as Chase Private Student Loans.  You don't have to pay the loans back until after school and they're not like regualr student loans-they write the check to you and not the school.  Look into a couple things.  Good luck!  Oh, and one more thing-some hospitals will pay for your school provided that you sign a contract to work for them for "X" amount of time when you graduate.

Have you considered working part time? and/or taking out student loans?  I worked three part -time jobs while in nursing school and had loans through financial aid.  I was single, no children, did not own a home, and had zero in savings.  If you REALLY want it, you will find a way to do it.  It is not always easy.  Most of the time , being a nursing student is hard, so you really gotta want it-

Good luck to you.

You absolutely can't beat the $2k price tag that the Fresno Adult School is charging for the LVN program. Assuming you're still going through with it, and that your husband makes "decent money," what can he bring to the table in terms of helping to make it happen?

I'm in the same boat as you and I am making it work. I am really focused and am doing just about anything to get the money together.
