I am preparing an educational  program for Preceptor and Mentor Skills Training. My research has stimulated memories of the nurses who have made a positive impact on my nursing career. I thought that it would great tribute to our role models and mentors to share their stories with each other. Please use only first names.

As a novice ER  nurse I had the honor of working with Trudy.  Whatever came through the door--she could handle it. Trudy was a combination of experience, intuition and compassion. She knew things---more than you could ever get out of a textbook.  The doctors listened when she spoke. She openly shared this knowledge with everyone.  I was a sponge and learned everything I could during the time we worked together.

The pediatric clinic was next door to the ER. One of the pediatricians burst though the doors to the ER carrying a limp 2 year old in his arms. Trudy handed me a surgical mask before I had time to take a step toward them. "That baby has meningitis". She was correct as usual.

My nursing career went to the next level by following her example.

Pat was and is a true "been there, done that" veteran nurse.  This former Flight Nurse turned ED nurse was the picture of calm in situations that would drive a lesser nurse to drink.  She was always able to communicate to staff, pt's and family with the measured calm of someone who could not be fazed.  Her skills and critical thinking and ability to respond to rapidly deteriorating pt conditions lead me to say "I wanna be you."

I get to work with her later in the week & I feel I'm a better nurse just being her partner.
