Posted about 5 years ago There is discussion in the "anonymous" section referring to other member's spelling & grammar on the site. What do you think of member's abilities and potential in the field of nursing based solely on their profiles and postings? Names not mentioned as examples, thanks. |

| Posted about 5 years ago I do believe that writing skills are crucial. When we are in a social environment some things are overlooked. However, I have seen some atrocious grammar on here. I often wonder how they got through school or as far in school as they are with such poor skills.
A lot can be learned about the people on here based solely on their postings. There are some that I would never hire. It is very much like a first impression. Such as those who wear sweat pants and flip flops to a job interview.

| Posted about 5 years ago I have to agree. This is not a profession one can excel at without proper education. I have no doubt that many out there have the heart and passion to be a nurse, but do they have the cerebral ability? I, too, would not hire some people if they spoke the way they typed (for a nursing position). Professional communication is paramount in nursing. |

| Posted about 5 years ago Absolutely I agree with both of you. Actually thought it was just me, since in a former life I have a BA in English. |

| Posted about 5 years ago I agree too. I was told when I was in school only 3 years ago by one of our instructors that if you don't know how to spell it look it up. I've often wondered if they chart like they post. I certainly hope not. I really didn't know if it was me just be picky or what. Guess not. I wonder too, if people just really can't type, or that with all the IM's and text messages they send they just get use to no thinking about the spelling b/c everythng is abbreviated.

| Posted about 5 years ago I agree too. I must admit that in todays world of computers, myspace, and other internet postings and blogs, you seem to type words wrong and people still know what you were trying to say. People forget how to write full sentences these days and use the correct spelling for their words. I'm really not one for all the "internet" abbreviations. I do like my "laughing out loud". I do use that one a lot. cdnurse: Who would go on an interview in flip flops? Do these people think they are serious? I love my flip flops, but not for an interview. Some people are just stupid, I'm sorry.

| Posted about 5 years ago Often, many of us will post here using sentence fragments and that is simply b/c of the way were taught to write nursing notes. The following are examples of what I am talking about. Verbalized understanding. Lying on l side. However, what we have seen on here is far beyond these habits or the use of text abbreviations. So often I have heard some of the people with poor English make remarks about foreigners in our country. These remarks are often very unkind and riddled with errors in the English language. As an example, “they need to learn how to talk English.” The English of a non-native speaker is almost always superior to that of an educated American. There are, I am thinking, referring to the accents. I have called people on this before and corrected their poor English and grammar. For you poor, undedicated, red neck types that do not get it; what should be said, if it needs to be said at all, it is speak, not talk, English. |

| Posted about 5 years ago I have to say, I am a stickler for good grammar. But even I let myself slip when I am online. Sometimes it's just so much easier to type "b/c" instead of because. I am afraid for future generations (today's middle schoolers) because (not b/c :) ) they have grown up texting one another and never using real sentences. My mom is a teacher and she says that she has seen papers turned in that say "U R" instead of "you are"!!! |

| Posted about 5 years ago When I grade papers that are turned into me by nursing students, I have no mercy for bad grammar, poor English, or misspelled words. I have had some papers turned in that were so bad that I would not even finish reading them. I give them back and send the student to the writing and English labs. There is no excuse for it.

| Posted about 5 years ago Below is just one example of what I am talking about. This was taken from right here on this site. No one will be embarrassed as this person was only on here one time nearly a year ago and not returned. If he/she does return, there is no name involved so no one will know where it came from. In addition, if he/she does show up and see this, maybe they will get a clue to go to a writing/ reading/ English lab. Imagine this one being read out loud in court. Which way do you think the jury would go? I was lucky that during all those times I never felt threaten. Therefore there are alot of policical issues involved. Issues that were always sweeped under the rug now are not.

| Posted about 5 years ago got grammar? It makes me giggle because all I can think about is Got Milk? The kidlet is just going to be twelve. His penmanship is improving, however his spelling is not. I was checking over an assignment last night, and ur was in the first paragraph. He was not happy when he had to rewrite his enter assignment over, correctly 19 abbreviations and misspelled words. |
