What certifications do you hold and maintain, aside from your license?  What has been the most useful?  What was the hardest to obtain?

In the ICU: we have to have ACLS, EKG training, and CPR are required. We also go through a hemodynamics class and critical care class.

I have certification in psychiatric mental health. I let my certification in addictions nursing expire. It just seemed like too much trouble to get all of the paper work together. Besides, I was no longer working on an addictions unit. Both were tough exams. I found the psych/mental health to be the most helpful.

Years ago I was certified in TNCC, ENPC, PALS, ACLS had to be in the ER.  Since then I am currently an ACLS instructor and maintain ACLS.  At the VA we dont' treat trauma or kids.

Tncc, Enpc, Pals & Acls-instructor here too.  I received my CEN 4 years ago and will have to renew in December.  the CEN exam was wonderful because all of the questions were relevant to my practice and I was able to answer from experience.  Much unlike the nclex.

Can't stand up to you guys but I do have BLS which the hospital I work at requires us to renew every year even though it is good for two year. I also have ACLS.That was pretty tough. Never used it though. I due to recert this year in October. Going into the OR, maybe one day I will get CNOR, but that will be long down the road. I heard it was really hard though.

I have ACLS, BLS, PALS, and TNCC.   I think maybe TNCC is quite useful regardless is was a great review of all the systems.

Quick question!!  I live in New York and plan on taking the NCLEX in about 2 years.  I want to be able to work in Connecticut as well (we're close to some of the CT. hospitals). Do I have to take the NCLEX in both states?

Kiku: you will take the exam only once but you will have to get a license in both states.

BCLS, IBCLC, RLC and I had PALS up until last year. The PALS was probably the hardest because of having to know all of hte meds to give for what ever rhythm very quickly. I am not generally an on-the-fly thinker. That's why I am not an ER or trauma nurse!

How many certfications do you need as RN? Do LPNs need these certfications too?

The certifications are not required at all. You can have none or two or three. LPNS I think do have some certifications. I know that there is at least one for LPNs in  long-term care (LTC).

Some hospitals will pay more for nurses with certifications.

To become an RN, no, they are not required.  To work in some areas, they are mandatory.  Each area of each facility can dictate this.

All the certifications have helped me with my assessment skills.  Even if it isnt necessary where you work going through them and learning them are great for career.

I think the classes to get the certs are good and helpful to your knowledge base, I have BCLS< ACLS<PALS<NRP<Advanced fetal monitoring, PICC, Wound Care Cert almost done with WOCN, INS, ASPO, Lactation, I DO get paid more for inserting PICC lines about $385.00 for one insertion peds is higher. The rest really does NOT get you a bunch more money but leverage to get a few bucks an hour more than others who do not have certs but experience I found gets you more money I get about 8-10 more an hour for my years of experience, I just like learning new things so I have continued to keep my certs current in case I change my mind about what I want to do when I grow up.LOL

I have Certificates in Computer Operations, and a Child Day Care Certification, I am not licensed yet,but waiting to get my home inspected by the state,  an,d waiting to take the NCLEX PN SOON!!!,so I can get my my Child Day Care license, work as a LPN,and  I want to eventually have a chain of family daycares. I love children. I still want to continue my schooling in nursing also, but my family daycares are going to be ran by my daughters. My Computer Operation Certificates were hard to obtain, because It took me forever to type 40words per minute. The school I went to, required that you type 40 words or more, to advance to the actual computer classes. I am glad, I got them, because, when I apply to a job, It looks great on my resume.

I am a proud mother of three beautyful daughter. I currently live in Los Angeles California. I've worked as a heathecare provider for almost 10 years. I am curently in school to pursue my MSN in nursing, and wants to work as a pediactric nurse, in public health.

I have BLS, ACLS, though I am not certified with Oncology but I got Biotherapy and Chemotherapy Provider Card to be renewed every 2 years by passing the exam. I just got my Certification for Med-Surg RN, I do not know how will it help to boost up one's career that med-surg is the basic and foundation of nursing skills. But I just tried the exam, was tough but I did it.

I'm going to let my CEN expire at the end of this year.  $370 just to renew something that doesn't really get me anything.  Can't really justify that with Christmas coming up.  Attaining it was a goal...shoveling money to the ENA wasn't.

In the ER I have ACLs TNCC BLC CCRN

In Mental Health I have CPI and CRT

I guess the hardest to get was the CCRN because of the cost

Ok I have learned alot from this web site since pursing the do I or don't I in nursing.  I started my pre-req's in January for nursing, so explain to me what are the certifications you are talking about.  I'm assuming it's for different areas within the hospital.  I'm currently working in a Dialysis Facility and absolutely love it,  to be a RN is a long time dream of mine, so since I have one son out of the house and another starting high school, I figured now would be as good a time as any to go back to school, since I was a stay at home mom for the majority of my son's childhood....

Thanks to all participants on this comment, I'm a new student on the program for RN, but all my life I have been a stay home mom and never work.  I feel confident on my self but, not knowing how to start, bothers me.  I do not have any idea yet, on which area of nursign will like to be on. Any ideas?  Thanks.

ACLS, PALS, TNCC...I joke that my hobby is studying for CCRN, which I haven't ever taken because I find the cost prohibitive.

I have ACLS, BLS and am getting ready to renew my PALS next week. ER's in TX will not let you work without these certifications. I'vee been miserable working med/surg while trying to find a place to certify me for PALS so I can get back to the ER. I'm a sicko...I actually miss the ER! Actually, I think I miss the autonomy and independance.

How can I find out more information about aquiring certifications.  I am a new RN on a medical/oncology floor for almost a  year now.  I

work 2nd shift and don't realy have the opportunity to speak with administration all to often.  Is there a website that offers information about

nursing certifications or will the hospital I work for have information on how to obtain certifications.  I would like to become chemo certified

at some point.  I'm sure there are alot of different types of certifications available, I just don't know where to start looking.

PHTLS (pre-hospital trauma life support)  I really enjoyed that one....extracation and patient care from the scene to the hospital, EMT training-wow was that a quick, hard class, but I loved every minute I put a C-Collar on some dummy!  ACLS, and CPR of course.
