Our school required it for graduation. We didn't have to pass to get our diploma, just go to a tutor class if you got less than 850. I didn't study for it, we had our last test the week of the HESI and then finals the next week and they were more important for me to pass...to get the degree. This was the pretty much everyones thought, we need to pass nursing first. I ended up getting a 975. I think just relax and think it out, what would you do, don't fret. Do you have to pass it to graduate? Good Luck!

cd, it's a predictor test. If you score 850 or higher it shows you may pass the NCLEX.

And this is required to graduate? Do the schools that require this provide the students with prep courses? This sounds like a tremendous amount of pressure to me. Pass all of your classes but you get no degree without this? Sounds like an invitation to a law suit.

yea we have to pass this class in order to receive our degree... so i passed all my classes but i can't receive my degree until i make a 850 or better on this test. On the week of final exam week we had to take our finals for the nursing classes, a final for comtemporary trends, A nln test, then i had my other class final in sociology, then we had to take our Hesi exit exam. It all happened in one week. I was so stressd out i got sick.

Wow! Stresses me to just read it. I just cannot imagine the pressure. I just do not see how they can hold your degree from you when you pass all of the classes.

Our instructors voted and decided we didn't have to pass to get our degree, we just had to attend a day of review. I didn't have to do the review but thought of going just to get help on taking the board but decided against it. I used the time to study for the final. We did have to take the HESI to get into the LPN to RN program. For that test I got a coulple NCLEX-PN books and took every practice test I could find. I did stress out for that one, pass or don't get into the program.

My school requires this too.  And so far I have not passed not a one.  Like you said there are some things on there that I was like HUH???  What the heck is that.  Especially on the Peds one.  I am required to take a NCLEX-RN prep class now.  And I have to keep taking the Hesi exit exam until I receive an 850 too.  Wow our schools are similar.   Oh and I bought the Hesi book too but I have used the NCLEX books in the past but I guess I need to crack open the Hesi book for my exit exam.  Hopefully the prep class helps.

Brookdale cc, in NJ requires a passing score of 850 to graduate.  Along with unit exams and finals.  For me, the best study aid was NCLEX questions over and over and over. This introduced new information as well as helped with test taking skills. We did not have a review class for this either. The instructors mentioned the very first semester to start the NCLEX books to prepare for both lecture exams, HESI and NCLEX.

I don't want to discourage anyone, but I just recently took the Hesi Exit Exam to graduate for the 3rd time and it looks like I'm going to be working on my 4th try. Does anyone have any suggestions? My school requires a 900 to pass. In May when my class graduated, we petitioned our nursing program saying 900 was too high a score for such a high stakes test, however of course we haven't heard anything. So all summer I'm here taking a course, (which I firmly believe the faculty is not qualified to teach). Results are in and my score went down over 100 points from last time. I'm really getting desperate to pass. I have used the Hesi book and c.d. over and over for two years. I also have 7 other nclex style question resources that I have been using. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I passed all of my classes, I was on the dean's list for 2 semesters! What is wrong with this picture? This is not a test, it is a tool. This is really ridiculous.

yes I took the Hesi exam, we had to take them about every 5 weeks I was in school for LPN and the test was based on a RN level, most of us scored right below and some scored 850 and higher.  The test is NOT that hard you just have to take your time and THiNK

I had to do the same thing.  First I had to take  final for the  nursing class then an NLN test.  HESI exit exam with score higher than 850.  If you don't pass you can take it again approx. 30 days later.  Fail again you have to take a Kaplan NCLEX review which cost $499 in order to get your diploma.  I was already stress with personal problems but I did take the HESI so I can get it over with and was surprise to pass with a 989.  I have to take my NCLEX on July 18, 2008 so I'm hoping to keep the same attitude when I took the HESI, wish me luck!!

Hello, I would like to comment on the Hesi exam.  I just took it for the 2nd time and I went down 120 pts.  We have to make a 900 or better on the exam to pass the course.  I am in the LPN to RN bridge program and I think this is really stupid that we have to take this exam in order to graduate.  I have 1 more try to take this exam or I graduate with an incomplete.  Please give me some advice on what to study... I have the Hesi RN book and the CD is a joke.  The questions are nothing like the test.  The test are really hard.  Please send all advice that would be helpful.

This is the best advice I can give.. I took the HESI 3 times and it was the charm for me.. After countless times of using the old cd and the new one... I passed... I was horrified that I paid all that money for the HESI book (which helped me all of NONE!)... I simply took a week off school and began to study from my IGGY book... I am not sure what critical thinking book you are using but we use Ignavaticus (sp?) too make a long story short I simply viewed the book chapter by chapter writing down important information on test... assessment ect... Then I took the test for the 3rd time and scored a 900... I was determined that I would not be detoured by this test that is simply ridiculous in nature.. Whoever you are you can do it too you have to find out what your motivation is not what someone else deems it to be... I am just one who believes if God leads you too it He can take you through it... Before I ever decided to bridge the program from LVN/RN I would pray and see if I was lead to do this.... I started to doubt but never strayed and I accomplished the goal... NCLEX is nothing like the HESI and I do not see the correlation between the two... This test is a probability determining factor instituted stating that if you can obtain an 850 an equivalent to a B you would perhaps pass NCLEX.... and that was very strange to me since I know people who passed the HESI but didnt pass boards you do the math on that one....

and yes there have been student who have been successful in hiring lawyers to graduate and it has happend for them.... I have to say that I am truly displeased since there were areas of the HESI that were never taught and I seemed to be that one person who had never heard of the material but after thoroughly sitting down and reading the books (Iggy.. Wong (pedi)... Maternity... Psych).. I passed  had I known that I would have never spent the money for the HESI material which were a waste of money and time....

All I can say is if this is what you want I will be praying for you because I understand your struggle.... mine was far more greater than yours but  thats another story and I would need to write a book on the past 3 years of my life....

I dont tell God how big the storm is... I tell the storm how Big my GOD is...

I am going to be taking the HESI for the fifth time...ridiculous!!!!  Our school requires us to pass with a 900, otherwise we can't officially graduate.  There are several of us having to take it for the fifth time and we don't know what to do.  The school is telling us now that we have to go to this remediation class for 5 weeks...which is taught by one of our instructors...definitely not HESI certified to teach the class.  It is only one day a week for four hours.  I don't understand why they just don't have all the days combined to one week...the school changes their mind on a regular basis.  The best score that I have obtained was a 872.  I don't understand why they will not allow us to take it once or twice a week to pass.  I feel that they are not doing their best to prepare us for this test.  They made us buy the HESI book and they just handed it to us and said here read this...which by the way is completely useless! One would think that since our assistant dean was one of the authors of the book she would have helpful tips, but all she tells me to do is 200-400 questions a day from the NCLEX 3500.  And from what I have heard they are totally opposite.  Several of us don't know what we should do...thought about getting a lawyer...not sure just yet.  Any suggestions for passing this ridiculous test or where to go to get help???

Sometimes I think you have to choose the silliest answer. Something that doesn't make the most sense. When in doubt I went with the wierd answer.

In reply to nursekitty08,

Thanks for the advice, would you please explain the IGGY book!!!!  Is this another hesi book or something maybe I already have.  I am hoping that the third time is the charm for me too.  There has only been about half of my class pass.  Of course there were people that passed that don't know how they did it, but oh well!! everything happens for a reason.

thanks for all of your help!!!

I am so glad, after reading these posts, that the university I attend does not use the HESI or the TEAS.  First semester our freshman year we took the TEAS just to see what our scores were like and for the school to see who ended up getting accepted and who didn't make it.

I have heard that other schools in my area require the TEAS and HESI as a means of admission but not as a requirement for graduation.

I just passed all my nursing classes and won't get to graduate because I didn't make a 900 on the Hesi. We had 3 chances & that was it- no review class- no nothing. Those that this happened to (1/2 the class) will be given a "D" when that is not what we earned. When I started nursing school, they required 850 - then the beginning of last semester, they put a piece of paper in our face saying that it has been changed to 900 and if we didn't sign saying we understood, then we would have to leave immediately. I'm not sure about getting an attorney and fighting this because we did sign that paper- even though we were threatened. I don't understand how they can keep you from graduating when I paid my tuition & passed the classes. This test is not even required by state board.

The exit exam practice is being increasingly questioned in nursing education. What happens is students who may actually pass the NCLEX are never given the chance to take it because of a HESI (or another exit exam) score.

HESI is good at predicting NCLEX success because it sets the pass score so high. HESI is NOT good at predicting NCLEX failure. A majority of the students who do not attain an 850 who are allowed to take NCLEX actually PASS.

This is documented in the August 2006 issue of Nurse Educator

Schools have this crazy policy because they want to have a good pass rate. So if the students have even a small chance of failing the school prevents them from taking the test and protects their pass rate.

It is not fair to the students to let them spend their time, money, and hard work for two to four years and then deny them the opportunity to fulfill their dream of being a nurse. It is the school's responsibility to prepare the students throughout their nursing program to succeed on the NCLEX.

Several states are looking into this practice. New York State has already banned it.

There is a lot of money to be made by the testing companies (more than 247,000 took NCLEX RN and PN in 2006). Profit seems to be fueling this practice.

Perhaps the students who were denied graduation should get together and seek legal advice, or at least register a complaint with your state board of nursing or NLNAC.
