Hi everyone,

Today, I have finally taken the Hesi Exit Exam, and got a score of 980!! Obviously, I am very happy :)!

Because I have used this forum a lot during my studies, I thought it would be nice to give back a little.

So for all those still studying, here comes my 2 cents!

If you already started studying on this exam, you probably know that the difference between the HESI test and your other tests is that often all four possible answers on a HESI multiple-choice question can be considered correct.

With the HESI, always remember they are asking for the textbook version of the right procedure!!

Knowing this, the very first step to being prepared for the HESI is to bond with your textbooks.

The next positive step you can take is to purchase or borrow one of the several study guides that are specifically for the HESI test. These are commonly for sale on Amazon.com and other on-line sites.

There are also actual HESI practice tests available. I found these to be VERY helpful!

The more practice tests I took online, the more relaxed I became with the Hesi format. Relaxing helped me think through all the answers when I finally took the exam today.

I used the Saunders Comprehensive Review Book and NCLEX Review 3500 to prepare and found them somewhat helpful.

I was also lucky enough to get a spot in the HesiPractice.com coaching program, which helped a lot in terms of practice and studying the right things.

As most people on this site argue, I would advice other students to really practice for this exam!

Adequate practice and having the right exam taking techniques was my key :)!

Good luck everyone!

The Hesi test should be banned because it do not determine how good of a nurse you will become. You have nursing students who have different learning styles.  I think once students complete the basic classes they should begin training right away. We have a shortage of nurses all over the country. The Hesi test do not have anything major to do with the core of classes. Teach students what they need to know to be a good skillful qualified nurse. Nursing students should protest all over the world. People are wasting money in school for nursing to become a dead end because of the entrance exam and in most cases people change their major because of it.

lbasey,

Are you referring to the HESI entrance exam?  This is different than the HESI exit exam.  I understand that it is frustrating to not be able to get right into nursing school, and to feel like you can't just get in and start learning.  Yet what is really keeping you out is the fact that there is a shortage of faculty qualified to teach and not enough slots in nursing programs.  It isn't the entrance exam keeping students out of open spots, as far as I know.

Additionally, although there are many skilled nurses who may have struggled in their classes and failed their NCLEX board exams but do just fine in clinical work...schools are judged by how many students fail classes and do not pass boards.  There is no taking into account different learning styles.  As an instructor with voice into how we accept students, I recognize that we have to take the ones that are most likely to pass a board exam on the first try.  That is why both the HESI entrance and the HESI exit are used so widely.  Nursing school is not just about skills and training.  It is first and foremost about education.  I hope that you can get some assistance with your learning style so that you are able to pass the HESI entrance exam and pursue your dream.

There are different types of HESI Exams. I think people don't understand that. I found this info:

There are actually 3 types of HESI: the HESI Admission Assessment exam (HESI A2), several specialty HESIs, and the HESI exit exam. Every HESI exam is taken on the computer, each one of them is timed, and they’re all supposed to be able to predict something.

Good luck.

My daughter completed her nursing program with a 92% in the class and failed the HESI by 5 points.  She was dimissed from this particular nursing school with no degree, and $40,000 in college loans to pay.  We are currently fighting with the school because during the time she was in their RN program, they raised the HESI score requirement from 750 to 850.  In June 2009 she failed with a 730, in September, after having to repeat the term, she received a 790, but in those three months, they up'd the score requirment to 850.  This test was not required to pass when she started their LPN course in 2007.  They have made it impossible for students to pass, and the fact that it "looks bad" on their school for low NCLEX pass rates just shows that if they were teaching properly, they wouldn't have so many fail.

Who in their right mind would spend the time and money going through a nursing program that could take your money and dimiss you over 5 points??  I have made it my mission to get her degree, and will let a court decide if I have to.  I keep reading where NY has banned the HESI, but can't find anything online to back that up.  Anyone have any information on that??  Thanks so much!

HESI Exit exam,

took it this past week. Was challenging. Exam focus: many questions on peds, iv antibiotics, total of 4 drug calculations fill in the blank, many med surg. Apparently there are several versions to the test. The school has test bank of couple thousand questions.

Wrong method of study: failed to use hesi book as daily, as previous exams. Should have put more time into sample questions. Barely passed with >1000 points.  mORE freq study groups.

Did right: learned rationale and study groups, used test bank questions. The exam was time limit was about 5 hours. I was sure to take a few ten minute breaks for every 50 questions. I did not change any answers, once i made up my mind, i kept that answer and forced myself to move on.

If i had to do it all over again, i would do as the teacher told us, I would do 200 questions each day. My focus would be on why i answered the questions wrong, and i would goto more group sessions.

Good Luck, You can do it.

cdnurse says ...

And this is required to graduate? Do the schools that require this provide the students with prep courses? This sounds like a tremendous amount of pressure to me. Pass all of your classes but you get no degree without this? Sounds like an invitation to a law suit.

My school says that the whole school is a prep course for the NCLEX and that is what HESI is, a prep for NCLEX. I failed will be held back for just this exam..

Will you have to take your nursing class over again next year and retry to take this exam in order to pass? Or do you have to just take the HESI test again in order to graduate?

Our school required it or we didn't get a diploma as well! The Hesi is 10 times harder than the NCLEX! I tried the Hesi book but found it useless. I just studied from Saunders and did really well. Relax, eliminate 2 of the 4 answers, Read the question again and ask yourself " What exactly are they asking me?" Pick your answer from the two remaining and don't second guess yourself. Your first choice is usually right!

I took the Hesi today and scored 1046.  Well our school requires us to take it after our first year of nursing school before entering second year, but we are required to pass with a 800 or we have to attend summer school.

Our school told us that the teachers summits all the exams that they used, and HESI caters the HESI exam to the material that was taught. But Hesi also throws in fillers, like materials that you haven't learned before. So don't panic when you see stuff you never learned or saw before. They might throw some drugs on there that you have never been taught, but they sometimes slip in what the drug is for.

Also you always have to remember that the answers are mostly all right, but the main focus you have to think about is, "WHAT IS THE FIRST THING, OR PRIORITY TO DO FIRST" all the answers maybe right, but choose to protect the client first. ABCs first, then disabilities like pain, and then maslows needs comes next.

So your best bet to study for the exam is to review all the material and subjects that you school focused on. Also the HESI book helps alot too, learn to memorize the values from the Hesi book. Also if you have access to HESI case studies that also helps too. If your school required you to get the HESI book, then you should have also gotten access to the case studies too. you should be able to access it on the Evolve site. Hope this helps. We were using the HESI book 2nd edition, but they came out with a newer version.

search on amazon and type out "hesi nclex review" in the search box.

Distributing HESI exams from 2011 and 2012 is illegal and unethical.  I would hope that nurses would hold themselves to a higher standard.  Do you want someone caring for YOU who cheated their way through nursing school?  I don't.

hesi is taking so many lives of people. family and money. i m not rich to waste money like this.i m meant to be a nurse deep of my heart. This exit crushed my dreams. i m in the same boat and  my schoool requires exit to pass in 4 times. i got ati two times and  failed two times not severly only missed 5 points. I have two more tries and this time it is hesi or nln. i have completed the program do what i was told to then left with no diploma, this is so hurting. i have family too.  stateboard doesnt require exit exams and they  a lready pased this law  in the state not to withhold diplomas but the sdchool is not implementing this. i have one more month and a half to study

IT IS ILLEGAL to use the HESI test bank.  Please, if we want Nursing Link to be a legitimate forum for nurses and nursing students, do NOT post information like this in this forum.  I have been told that not all online HESI exams for sale are truly the HESI examination.  I have had students who cheated by getting the HESI test bank.  THEY DID NOT PASS BOARDS.  I understand the frustration, but we need to hold ourselves to a higher ethical standard.
