Hi there,

I have just found this website and thought to ask some of the more educated nurse audience out there.

I am currently a Bachelor of Health Science Student studying in Auckland, New Zealand (NZ), hoping to complete a Nursing degree in the next few years and come out to work in the nearby Auckland Hospital. I have set myself a goal of working in this country as a Nurse for at least a year, perhaps more. My loyalty rests in this country despite the many Nurses leave to work overseas for a greater income and life.

I have very little information about Nursing in general and even less in the numerous branches Nursing professions can reach for.

However, I have heard recently from a classmate that there are only a few male midwives in New Zealand, there are currently about 10 male midwives in NZ in New Zealand, and much less are practising midwifery. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/11/story.cfm?c_id=11&ObjectID=10387149 , http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/nelsonmail/4394983a6510.html . I am interested in changing that minute figure of male midwife practitioners and considering joining the force, but first need some information on what they do, other than delievering the baby and caring for it which I already know of.

I currently lack the information about the different talents and skills a midwife possess or does, only the general public perception that midwifery is a girlygirl subject.

Aside from that topic: After reading you might have thought that I have mixed the terms Midwife and Nurse mixed up, but isn't a Midwife or Nurse the same as a Midwife Nurse? I got that word from this website.

Thanks for reading,

Thanks for your feedback,

Han
