I am a married mother of two (ages 5 and 6 months) and about to finish up my BAS in management degree in the next several months. Over the past several months I have been having trouble trying to figure out "what I want to be when I grow up..." even though I'm going on 27 years old. More and more I am feeling the pull of the medical field. I originally wanted to have an admin job to really use my BA degree, but the more and more that I think about it the more I feel the pull of being a nurse. I absolutely love working with people and find that I am very calm and collected in tense situations, and even do my best work when under tight schedules.  Needles and blood don't overly excite me much but I have never felt a great fear of it either.  I excel at math but struggle at lot at science, although with a lot of work and patience I can make it through it. I guess I am not sure if this is right for me. It is completely opposite of everything that I have trained for and thought about my entire life.... but now its all I can think about and its completely exciting to me.  My downfalls are that I have a HUGE weakness to children dying and I just don't know how I would handle it in a real-life situation, I cry just reading about it... how could I witness it and have it not affect me? I know you eventually build a barrier against it... but I am sentimental when it comes to kids. That is my only hangup I suppose, and one that I worry about.

So... that is me in a nutshell... Should I try for it... or am I completely crazy? :)

I am actually looking into going to nursing school to become a nurse. I've attempted to go to college for a business degree but due to some money issues I was not able to complete it. Since then I've been working in various sales jobs and really really dislike the lifestyle I am forced to live. My girlfirend's mom is actually a nurse and she actually recommended nursing to me recently and I've been giving it some serious thought. I'm curious about what the hours are like in nursing? I also do not like gore in movies and ect. and it gives me the shivers when I see really bad injuries in tv and youtube ( when something goes wrong and someone end up getting hurt). I was wondering if anyone else had a problem with that and if you have overcame that fear. Blood on the other hand does not bother me too much. I do consider myself a really caring person and the one thing in sales that I enjoyed is how many different kinds of people I was able to meet. Would you also recommend a career in nursing for someone like me?

Tim, 1st of all, welcome to NL.. You have alot of valid questions..I think there are alot of pre-nurses that feel this way too. It seems that once you get used to the situations, it doesn't seem to bother you any more.. I myself, became a trauma junkie..LOL As far as the hours go, they are 24/7, but you can choose the shift you want.. Remember there are weekend and holiday shifts to cover also...Best of luck to you and  please keep us posted.. Teresa

 Hi there,

I am a nursing student in my first year in the UK. Our degrees are a lot more centred on practical, on the ward or on placement work. I thought at first nursing would be a good career for me because I liked working alongside people and biology. I never had the so called 'calling for nursing.' On placement, I often find myself consistnently doubting whether or not I am up to the job, depsite other students support. Other students on placement with me often think I am third year in terms of my ability to manage a group of patients given to me, and how I can handle and work alongside patients and family in teaching them to cope with an illness. I love the part of nursing where I can help and teach patients about thier health, but I am not really passionate about the other tasks. I sometimes feel like I am just there to do hard graft work that the other nurses and CNAs don't want to do. Although I work hard and to the best of my ability, I am finding that I don't have that passion and drive to work to that 150% in nursing. I don't find the theory that we have done stimulating or intelectually difficult.  Now, I am a bit unsure if I should continue my degree.  I know I could make a good nurse eventually, but sometimes I think I would just end up as a medicore one.  I wonder if it is just me putting to much pressure on myself to succed or if this degree is right for me.

jazzy, Hiya.. It sounds to me like you have valid concerns.. I'm just curious to know though if after you are finished with school, will you still have so much hands on?  It sounds like you are gifted also as an instructor.. If you continue and put some time in, would you like to be an instructor to the patients or even the nurses? What do you think?   Teresa

Hiya, you know there are so many titles around for so many different positions. My sister-in-law is a Sonographer but not a nurse.. I imagine if you are a nurse in that specialty that you can have both titles...Teresa

Hi All

I am already an RN, I got my license 2 years ago but i didn't get to practice my profession for some personal reasons. I am always good at theories, in fact I got good academic background, however, I am not good at application,,is the clinical area right for me? Or is it time for me to have a career change? All inputs will be appreciated. Thanks a lot

ianursestudent, I have to say the first thing I thought of when I read your post, was ouch. I ope you don't think of having a career change after achieving what you have done. Maybe a re  resher course.. There are so many nursing options out there.. You may not even know what would really interest you until you try it.. Explore It's and unending career just for you to pick.... Best of luck to you. Please keep us posted.. Teresa
