How many of you on here are without healthcare insurance now or in the past? What would happen if you lost your job today and had no insurance? How many of you know someone who has had to file bankruptcy because of medical bills

I've had health insurance since I started working for 15 years.  I am going part time at my job in sept and I will lose my insurance.  I am scared to death.  anyone know where I could get some affordable insurance?

Affordable health insurance? There is no such thing. Are you in school? Sometimes the schools will offer insurance for students. It is rather inexpensive but not good for much unless it is a big health catastrophe. Big deductibles and covers no yearly check ups or anything like that. No prescription coverage, It is better than nothing.

I have insurance for the last 12 years.  There was a time when I didnt have insurance.  My ex-husband got out of the military and they offered us insurance at a Corba rate.  HOLY COW! that was so expensive.  The rate was $750 a month for the family.  We tried to pay is very month but evently we just couldnt afford it, since I was the only one working and we needed to pay rent and eat.  But our son was really sick since birth and we needed insurance so I had to go to the state for insurance for our children.  That was not my finest moment.  But witout insurance his medical care was outrageous.  I then land a job that was paying great and had insurance.  I called the state and let them know that I no longer needed it.  The was a good day.  I hope that I never have to do that agian.

I've always had insurance and hopefully will. I am going to be changing jobs next month and continue my current insurance through cobra. For me and my daughter they told me it will be 625.36. I thought that was unbelieveable. I call BCBS about a private policy and can get a policy for me and my daughter for 469.99. That's $155. cheaper and the coverage is really a little better with exception of the deductable.

When my son became unemployeed last October, I took out a private policy on him, b/c I just couldnt let him go without insurance.

I honestly don't see how be can manage without medical insurance.

I am covered by my husbands military  insurance, retired tricare. He pays $38/month for the two of us. We have free meds with it. I don't go see Drs but it is nice to know we have it when needed.

Please don't pay any attention to my misspelled words or typos. Sorry I'll try harder next time.

The insurance plan I have now, is restricted. When I say restricted, I mean, I can only use it a one heathcare facility. I have to pay a 30 dollar co-payment with each visit, which only covers me in a event of urgent care, but doesn't cover my medications, ER care, are outpatient, the only  services that are covered a hundred percent covered without a co-payment is my OB_GYN visits, thats it, everthing that is outpatient, I will have to pay out of pocket. So I am most definetally, looking for better healthcare, or free healthcare, without any restrictions.

I am a proud mother of three beautyful daughter. I currently live in Los Angeles California. I've worked as a heathecare provider for almost 10 years. I am curently in school to pursue my MSN in nursing, and wants to work as a pediactric nurse, in public health.

I have been without insurance when I worked this temp job from 1995 to 1999.  But there was a time when my son was 3 yrs old and he didnt have any insurance and when I finally did find him some it was so expensive I kept lapsing on it. Thank goodness he is very healthy and only had to go to the doctor for well baby check ups and for shots I took him to the local clinic for $10.

SInce being gainfully employed for the last 14 years, I've not been without insurance.

I too was a recipient of government provided health insurance while in school, but only because I had my son.  He was healthy for the most part (chronic ear infections resulting in tubes), thank goodness, but I can't imagine if I'd had nothing at all.

Believe you me, I walked out of the medicaid application office in tears.  Growing up on that kind of program made it most difficult for me to swallow my pride and ask for help.  The case worker I got make me feel like absolute dirt because she rolled her eyes and kind of huffed when I told her that I was only applying for the time it took me to get through nursing school...I suppose she thought that I'd be a lifer on the system...now I can understand why though.

The good thing is, if I lost my job for any reason, my husband can also carry the insurance...I consider myself very fortunate as I know that there are a number of people out there who don't have such a luxury.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up, worn out and screaming "Woo-hoo"!!!

I grew up on state insurance because my mom was a single parent and her job did not allow her to be able to afford coverage for me and my brother.  While it was better then no insurance it was not a very good thing in retrospect.  It did allow us to get care when we needed it, however there were certain things it lacked on, such as using lower quality supplies (esp.dental).  While my children were growing up I also had state insurance for them.  I had a piece of mind that I could take them to a doctor anytime they needed one.  Now I have insurance through my work.... I am having a wake up call.  Now there are co-pays for everything and heaven forbid I should need a new pair of glasses or any tests run before the insurance company deems it necesary.........  If I drop down to part time I will lose my insurance all together unless I pay big bucks myself for it.  I also have Aflac coverage to help with any big costs should anything major go wrong and I am not able to work for an extended time.  I had a co=worker who this happened to and she lost nearly everything she owned just to get her health back.....   You know life sure is GOOD in this here place called USA.........

DaMomb_ being a single parent of 3 small kids, I too was on government aided health insurance while I attended nursing school. When I graduated and found my first job as a nurse, I was terrified that I wouldn't be able to afford the same kind of insurance for my kids.  I work part-time now  but get my insurance through my husband's employment. My oldest son presently does not have insurance. It's scarey!

I had health insurance prior to going to nursing school. Once in school I did not work enough hours to keep it going.  I got some insurance through the school which was 450$ a semester and was not good. So someone here told me to go to the national student nurses association because they offer discounts to the nursing students that join the association.  I now have better insurance than what the school could offer and it is reasonable.  But it has a huge deductible.  Hopefully I wont need  to use it much until I am done with school in another year! I know people who do not have insurance and will not go to the doctor even when something is wrong.  And also someone who did not have insurance and was injured with hip/leg injuries while helping a neighbor cut down a tree.  He had declare bankruptcy because he could not afford the hospital bills.  He had complications and was in the hospital for 3 weeks.  So not having insurance is financially devistating.

Since I still live at home and still go to school, my dad's job insures me. He has Aetna and let me tell you it's like PREHISTORIC Health Insurance.  For a family of 4, he pays over $600 a month and the coverage is crap! To have 100% coverage you need to first meet a $10,000 deductible. This worked out real well last summer when I was in the hospital for almost 30 days with my DVT and PE. My parents had to put out $10,000 and then the rest of my medical bills were paid at 100%.  My total hospital bills were over $450,000.  Insane!

I hope that once I graduate and get employed, I'll get some good insurance of my own.

My dad is currently looking for a new job just because these benefits suck.  What a shame that this is happening in America....where foreigners and others get healthcare for FREE!

My parents were paying $600 a month for my mom's insurance that covered nothing. She ended up paying out of their pocket for preventative care. Awful, something does need to be done but the thought of our government being involved scares me greatly.

Hey you know I watched a movie about our health care versus care in places like Canada and England and France.  It is called Sicko by Micheal Moore.  No, I am not really a great fan of his work however it does really get you to thinking.  His work is subject of some debates, however once you take into consideration that he is showing the extreme cases and put that into perspective you can make your own judgement about what he is trying to bring to light.

I found Sicko to be a fantastic work. It should shake some people up.

I too am not a FAN of Michael Moore but I would love to see Sicko and hear his reports. American health insurance is very sad.

He can take his "Farienheight 911" and stick it where the moon doesn't shine.

Yes this show does bring to light what we as nurses already are tooo very familiar with.  People who are not around the healthcare field everyday will probably have a hard time really believing it.  I should try to watch 911 again and look at in a different perspective.  talk to poeple in that field about it and see if what he is trying to bring to light really is true......  Sometimes the truth is just to shocking for poeple to accept......    another lesson to be learned.... right cdnurse.....

My husband and I currently do not have health insurance... we make too much money to qualify for government assistance, but not enough to pay expenses out of pocket. I'm terrified that one of us will hurt ourselves badly or come down with an illness; and at this point, if we ever got pregnant, we would not be able to keep it in good conscience. It weighs a lot on my mind.

I don't have health insurance. I have also suffered serious financial setbacks because of it. I hate insurance companies...still don't trust the gov't though. I trust the admited greed of an insurance company over the supposed altruism of the political elite any day. At least the insurance company is honest that they don't care about whats best for you.

I am getting ready to take on some PRN jobs (pay is so much better) however, I will lose my insurance.  I am uninsurable by individual insurance since I was treated for depression at one time.  I am going to end up just taking my chances until one of the PRN positions could turn into a full time.  Luckily, my husband is covered under Medicare or else I would not be able to leave a beginning to become intolerable job. I contacted a company that has a program for unisurables but my gosh, $500 per month and a $5000 deductible (your meds go toward the deductible) seems a little steep.  It seems to me that with as many nurses that are uninsured, there should be a way that someone could get a pool of nurses and get a group rate just for them and their families.  Maybe that is something I could do in my free time. Oh, I forgot, I don't have any free time.

I've always carried health care insurance....over the last 25 years since I was 18.  The best was military tri-care, I had a fall with a broken arm, and no deductable, and no co-pay.   The worst was an HMO in NC.  I paid $400 for the birth of my son, that was a precipitous unattended delivery, the hospital bill was $1600 and my insurance had an agreement with the hospital to pay $2500 per delivery, but through some loophole, I had to pay  25% of the bill...since that was my co-pay for hospitalization.  I even appealed it, and had to pay, so the hospital was paid almost $3000 for  a deliveryt that only cost $1600...I honestly don't even know how that is legal.  But I was told that my part of the HMO 'contract' made me responsible for 25% of the bill.  In one place in NC, my husband's employer wanted $220 a week for family health insurance...that's about $900 a month.  Needless to say we  did something else.  Now, that I'm employed by a large hospital, I have fairly resonable healthcare, at about $350 a month for the family, with decent deductables.

I had a pt last  month that was in an accident.  She was a Canadian.  She was amazed at how much we pay in this country.  She said for elective procedures there is a wait.  But otherwise for emergency care, or ugent care the system works good.  She said that she was glad that she was a Canadian, and wouldn't want to be a U.S. Citizen.

Isn't it amazing that we as health care professionals working in hospital settings and such and we have no health care??????   Crazy........   Here we are taking care of sick people, getting sick sometimes ourselves as a result and we have no recourse to take........  I just find this situation to sickening to fathom.............   I guess I am one of the few who should count my blessings that where I work I have the insurance I do.....  Of course if I get hurt outside of this area I basically have no coverage.........

My husband and I got married beginning of august, the end of august found out he got a blood clot behind his right knee. He had thought the pain was from a weight training  injury for 3 whole weeks prior untill he woke up one morning and was in so much pain he couldnt walk on it. Thank God we went to the ED and they knew what it was! Anyway he lost his job in November and was out of work until Feb. During this time we could not afford to get cobra to pick up his old insurance and my employer would not offer to put him on mine.  His doctor kept him on warfin and required him to come in for his blood tests every 2 weeks and then once a month. Of course we got bills. THis was such a hard time but things are better. I am very thankful that we now have insurance through my wonderful employer! Losing insurance is such a scary thing to go through. Until you really need to use you never know how important it is.

My husbands blood clot is finally gone after 12months. He is no longer on warfin. yay!

When I was in college I went for a little bit without health insurance.  I finally got some through North Texas, however it wasn't the best program and wanted you to see on campus doctors..I wasn't all about that.  I am lucky to say that my husband is Military so I won't lose my insurance anytime soon.... Speaking from a benefits person at my employer, COBRA is some serious money....sometimes it is better to be a self pay patient and pay your bills then to go on COBRA...unless our plan just sucks!

My sister-in-law doesn't have insurance with her practice since she is  a doc.  I think it is sad how doctors often times have to get HIGH price private insurance.  They should have an insurance out there especially for doctors
