Hey Everyone

I am in the process of registering for Fall Classes - I am still in limbo as to if I want to continue my education to apply to nursing school once I finish the pre-requisites or do I want to go to be a Paralegal.  A friend of mine pointed out something yesterday that I really had not thought about before regarding the nursing field.  I am a cancer survivor - resulting in have a complete hysterectomy in 2002.  Once the doctor released me he told me that for my well being that I do not need to lift anything over 20 to 30 pounds (although that is still a lot for me).  He advised me of this because of the way I had to be cut for the surgery (which turned into a complete exploratory surgery as well) and would pull my scar that is sensitive.  I also have trouble with my back from a freak accident that I had several years ago.  I would like to know anyones insight on this.  Could this cause a problem for me if I go into the nursing field?  I feel if I lose weight would help me out alot physically - I am looking at the lifting patients and such.  Any one have any advise?

If you have limitations with lifting etc ..... I would not advise nursing as a career choice. I am in my third semester of an RN program and it is real physical work. You will have other opinions on this but take my word as a  20 year medical worker; Nursing is HARD on the body.( I am 36) There will be those that will argue that you can get an administration / insurance ( set down) job. That usually requires a BS and all jobs want at least 1-2 years of floor ( Hospital) nursing. If  being a nurse has always been your dream then I say "go for it". Just be ready to stand on your feet for 12 hour shifts. I am of average weight and height and exercise moderately  and  even I am questioning if my body can hold up to the rigors of nursing . This is a job that REQUIRES you to be physically ready for ANYTHING .

Good luck.

There are several areas that you can go into that will not require that you are lifting and moving patients all day. Psych for one. Also, you ca nwork with the babies. Or, you can go into teaching. You just need to decide what you really want. Nursing or the legal field.

While this is true, cd soswalt still must get through nursing school where she must learn to lift, turn, transfer  etc., and that is great stress on someone who has been told by a physician she should not do any of those things.  Losing weight would certainly help you physically soswalt, but it will not change the advice you've been given by your physician.  As much as I wish I could encourage you to go for nursing, my advice is to go into the paralegal field for your own safety.
