I would  like to know how other hospitals cover call offs.I work at a small-med acute hospital(approx 200 beds)We have been and still have a call off coverage schedule. You are scheduled 4 hour blocks on your days to work, or on your days off is you wish. So, how does your facility handle it?

Our hospital has about 200 beds.  If you are talking about covering for people who call in sick, the house super starts calling everyone who works on that particular floor to see if some one will come in.  They also call the prn staff.  If no one will work and help cover, the staff on the floor is on their own.

If you are talking about being called off, we go on call for the entire shift and can be called in for any floor that needs help.

Our department works to call anyone who works on our department to get someone to cover.  It's rare that they don't find someone to cover.

Hey knight1t, where do you work.  I use to do staffing and at times would call everyone who was on staff, including surgery, and still not find some one to come in.  Of course I am a firm believer of what goes around, comes around and for all those that always say no, remember you might be the one needing the help and no one will answer your SOS.

Yea, i wish we could always find someone to cover call offs.It doesnt happen often. We use 4 hour block schedules either before or after your shift, if they do not have anyone to come in  nor have anyone to pull from another unit, you stay or come on, whatever the case may be.I was just curious how other hospitals  worked.I do not like call off coverage, but the alternative of working short isn't good either....(that happens enought as it is..)
