I'm having a lot of trouble deciding on a specialty - I start nursing school this spring. When do people usually pick a specialty? I like L&D, but I'm not sure - how does the process usually go?

You'll see many different areas as you go through school. You don't need to know what you want to do until your LAST semester really... and even then things change once you graduate and have done your last internship.

I have my prefered choices down to 2... but have 2 more specialties to rotate through and my internship. I am in psych now, and don't think that this is the area I will want to work in, After this I have geriatrics.

You have plenty of time and will see and hear a lot while you are in school.

Externships are a good way to find out if an area is for you. You can check your local hospitals for these programs. We have anywhere from 2-5 externs during the semesters and usually 6-7 during the summer.

When I started nursing school a year ago I thought for sure that I wanted to work in L&D, but now that I'm going through all the clinical rotations I'm not so sure anymore. Right now I'm at the point where everyone is asking me what kind of nurse I want to be but I always say I want to first do all the clinicals to see what I like the best.

Don't worry about it....it will come to you and hit you directly in the face.  once you start working with patients during your clinicals, you'll know where you want to work.

I've always felt, the speciality you end up in, isn't what you choose, but what chooses you.  Never in my wildest dreams did I think  the Operating room would be where I found my niche.  It simply never occured to me.  I wanted the ER, thought since I was such an adrenalin junky this would be the perfect place for me.

Until I went into the OR and it was absolute love at first incision.  I loved every single aspect of the OR.  Interviewing patients, scrubbing, circulating, interaction between team members, the camraderie, the respect I received from most surgeons.  The absolute acceptance, as a valuable team member. Did it satisfy my adrenalin rushes?  You betcha! A trauma, an emergency AAA, a patient going sour. Not much better rush of adrenalin than this.

My advice here, is to keep your minds open.  Experience every aspect of nursing, while in school.  Embrace it all.  Don't narrow your focus, because to often your mind will discard valuable information, thinking it isn't in your speciality.  Do this and you may not pass your boards.  Do this, and you may miss your niche, where you'll be happiest and so will your patients.  Ok, I'm climbing off my soapbox again.
