Tell us about your first day back to school...!

I started back to school yesterday.. that was long and dull.. grrr, I swear, my Sociology of Health prof has ADHD, and I mean it! Not exagerating.

Nursing classes will be fine.. just dull yesterday, as it was day 1 and we had a prof who I think is paid per word she says and not by contract per semester! LOL

Had my first day of clinical today. I am on a psychiatric ward for the next 6 weeks. I am in the Transitional Treatment Unit, and it's not very big. I feel kind if clausterphobic actually. But I am with my friend Stacey, so that makes it better. My group (8 of us) is all split up. 2 in High Care (locked unit, can be violent, so the guy in my gr is there along with a girl who is friends with him), one is in the ER, 3 on the open psych ward and us 2 on the TTU.

Tomorrow we start at 7:30AM and go until 2-2:30PM. We get patients tomorrow and participate in team meetings in the AM and Rounds in the PM. More so on Fridays when we are there until 3:30PM. 2 eight hr shifts a week. We have conference on Fridays as a group after clinical.

Anyhow, not sure how much I will enjoy psych, though it is more sit-down than I usually get in clinicals.. No vitals to take, maybe some meds; more IM injections to give though in psych, lot's of active listening.

That's my 2 days...

Marieke (2/3 an RN)

Wow, that sounds like alot! My first day in nursing school was pretty basic. We learned how to wash our hands and how to take off gloves. The course I am in is equivilant to a CNA course so I know the material because I'm already an aide. Our teacher told us that this course is like kindergarten and the next nursing class we start will be like jumping directly into high school. We don't get to start clinicals until October when we're in the next class. I'm a little nervous about those. I heard rumors of nurses disapeering when students are there. I don't want to be assigned to follow someone who doesn't care about their work. Does anybody have advice on handling school and taking care of a family w/ young children? My hubby is in school too, but my mom helps us out alot.

Yes, my first year was like that too... this is my 3rd and final year, so we get right down to business! We started clinicals in October too in first year, I think for us it was week 8. In year 2 clinicals started in week3, now 3rd year week 1 ! No easing into school..
Good luck to all NEW nursing students and those returning to nsg school!

You are so right, having a teacher you can understand, helps a whole lot, especially when you take your nursing science preriquistes. Good luck on your test that is coming up this monday. I started my speech 101 class last night. The first day of class, we had to present a speech about one of our classmates. Me, and a classmate, had to get up in front of the entire class to give a speech about each other. I was so nervous, I couldn't look up at the class.

Since we're all back in school, does anyone have an annoying classmate? The reason I ask is because there is always that one obnoxious student that thinks they know more than everyone including the teacher. Or they kiss up so much to the teacher that its disgusting. I have been in school for 3 years now, and I have one woman that sits behind me in my math for meds class that really takes the cake. I thought it would be therapeutic to vent online with others students who might be on the same page as me. BTW, everyone in this class is ready to strangle her

I feel the pain too because I went back to college after 14 years. I currently have a great job and I have to opportunity to help people almost every day, but I always strogle with my job. I have been attending classes since 10 months ago and I don't remember how crazy was my first day, but I still lost. LOL

Yes I had a student in my psychology class. The sad part about it, is the teacher always praise her. I think, because her father was a teacher at the school also. Has any one had a teacher that always praise a student that thought they were so smart or had a teacher that told the name of the person who scored the highest on a test. OOH! that bugs me.!!!
