| Posted almost 5 years ago Been in nursing for 30 years, prior to that started as an aide when I was 14 (don't you dare try to figure out how old I am, we will just leave it as I am just a little younger than dirt). Spent several years in neonatal care, NICU, urology, ortho, case management and the last seven years as Med/surg/tele. Have also worked ICU. Also have worked as house super when needed. Needless to say I get bored real easy and like to learn everything I can so I will work whatever floor they want me to. I am one of the few at our hospital that will try anything once, twice if I like it. The only units that I don't really like to go to are the rehabs and skilled nursing units and that is because at our hospital if either one of those units have more than 3 pts for each nurse, they whine and complain that they have too many patients. Of course when they come to med surg and have 6-9 patients they are really happy to go back to their 3 pts. I don't do OB at this hospital because it is a closed unit and they don't float to us and we don't float to them, but I would if I had a chance. I love urology and if I could find a hospital that has a urology only floor I would probably pack up and move to that place. In urology I did prostate ultrasounds and urodynamics along with seeing patients. I never really got bored and if I did the doctor would send me to a class to learn a new technique that we could use in the clinic. Having training in special areas do have their benefits. |
