I've been thinking about going to nursing school for ages and really really want to do it but I'm finding it impossible to earn a degree while working.  I'm a researcher at Genentech in South San Francisco.  If anyone knows of a program in the SF Bay area that has a part time program in nursing please advise!!  I would consider almost any type (level) of education (associates and up) just to get into the profession.  I already have a Masters in Biochemistry so an accelerated program would be best.

thanks!

There are absolutely no part time nursing programs.  The only part time is perhaps some pre-reqs you may not have although with your level of education, I can't imagine what it would be other than maybe anatomy and or physiology.  Part of the reason and this is my opinion is they feel nursing is a total commitment and between clinicals and classes, there is just no possible way to do it part time.

Thanks for the information.  That's a bummer.  Living in the Bay Area is too expensive to be out of work and racking up school debt at the ripe old age of 40.  I'd have to live in a box.

Sacramento City College (California) offers a part-time nursing program.  I met an acquaintance (my husband's co-worker) who works part-time with him and attends the ADN-RN Program part-time.  You should also try to attend an Informational Meeting that some Colleges offer for potential nursing students.  I attended and was advised that it would be difficult to work a full-time job while going to nursing school full-time as well.  The facilitators advised that if you must work - work part-time only.

You may have to look at the Colleges even outside of your County but within commutable means.  Try searches on the Colleges in your surrounding areas.  Good luck.

Genentech is an excellent company.  I believe it's #2 on the list of the best 10 places to work, with Google at the #1 spot.   I hear about all the perks the employees get; my sister works there as well but in the Colorado office.  She goes to the So. SF office for meetings still.

the bay area doesnt have any part-time nursing program and then again it is so competitive to get into the ones that we do have.  I also live in the bay area.

Yes, unfortunately the nursing programs seem to be saturated everywhere.  I have four more prereq classes to complete before I can apply for the program and even those are tough to get into; those classes seem to fill up quickly.  Persistence pays.  Keep lookin.  Have you tried looking into Colleges in Cities outside of the bay, like 45 min away?  (ex. Redwood City, Palo Alto, Mountain View, Sunnyvale, Santa Clara)
