Posted almost 5 years ago I am a mother of a premature baby who was born at 27 weeks! It was very tough those 2 1/2 months he was in there but he is doing fine now and is 7months old. During his stay i changed colleges and decided to become a NICU nurse bc my nurses were so supportive and trustworthy. I want to give a parent the comfort that i had and that they need during that time......do any of you believe that my career choice is a good idea and if so how would this be a benefit in getting a NICU job after school?? |

| Posted almost 5 years ago Lots of luck with the new baby! My little sister was born around 28 weeks...weighing only 2 lb 3 oz.....she is 8 years old now! My mother had breast cancer while she was pregnant with the baby and she passed away 3 days after she was born. I have been caring for her and also wish to pursue a career in NICU nursing. I have spoken to some NICU nurses on this site and many of them got a position right out of school...they say it is sometimes difficult to find ....but if not to try to begin with the regular nursery or labor and delivery. Good luck! - Kelly |

| Posted over 4 years ago Peaches07, I think your experience is a wonderful reason to choose your career path. I am also a NICU mom. My twins were born weighing 2 and 3 lbs at 30 wks. They stayed in the hospital for 5 weeks. The experience is life-altering. You never quite look at things the same, do you? This experience will definately help you in your work because what you do will forever be close to your heart. It is most certainly those strong and encouraging few who get us through the most difficult situations. How amazing to have the opportunity to give back the type of care that matters most. HMJensen |
