Two come to mind -the first was when I was working 11-7 shift and very sleepy. I emptied a foley and dumped it out instead of saving it for a 48 hour urine test that had to be restarted all over again. The patient told the doctor that I did it.  the second was when I worked for a pulmonary MD who was a real bear. You never knew what kind of mood he was going to be in. He could be real nice or real mean. Thank goodness this was one of his good days. Anyway, I would put up the patien''s CXR, he would bring the patient into his office and talk to him, then examine him, then bring him back into his office to finish up. I had just started there and was trying to be Nancy Nurse. As soon as the patient was in the exam room, I took down his CXRs and put up the next patients so they would be ready for the Dr. The doctor brought the patient back into the room. After the patient left, the doctor asked me if those were his CXRs. I said  "No". He said he had just spoke with the patient regarding the CXRs that were up thinking they were his. Thank goodness, there wasn't much wrong with either patient. I felt so foolish. The doctor said "Oh well!" But on a bad day I would probably have been fired on the spot.

What mistakes HAVEN'T been a learning experience???

The one that comes immediately to mind:

The day I injected an IVP med through a dopamine line...my pt got tachycardic & hypertensive for about 60 seconds, flushed in the face & said, "I don't feel well...my chest hurts."  Within 60 seconds, he was all better.  I went running to my preceptor & spilled the beans.  We watched him & ran cardiac enzymes.  All was well.  Boy, did I feel like a dumb baby RN (2 months out of school) performing an unscheduled chemical cardiac stress test on my patient.

What I learned - We Are All Capable of Life Threatening Errors!  Be Careful Upon Whom You Pass Judgment!

Ever since then, if I hear someone ragging on a staff member for being "stupid" I think about that day.  Thank goodness everything came out o.k.!

I do NOT think their is a medical professional alive on this planet who has NEVER made a mistake if you say you have not you are a LIAR. Hopefully your mistake does not take the life of a patient that would probably be hard to live with hopefully it is a recoverable error, but it is ALWAYS a learning experience.

A busy RN is here

You know something, this reminds me to take everything one step at a time and to be careful who you judge.  It's also never a good thing to engage on the listening end of gossip.  You couldn't have said that any better!

Is this thing on??
