Does anyone have any pointers or help for Chemistry?  I have a teacher that is a complete moron.   I am really having trouble with the conversions and figuring out specific heat.  Any internet sites that are good?  I have to teach myself this stuff and it's pretty difficult during the summer since it's going by so fast.

The conversions that I am having trouble with is real basic how to convert mg into cm, etc.  I will be getting into converting moles here in the next couple of days.  But my teacher is not teaching the math very well.  I need visual.  Also on specific heat.  The formula given to us was:  Specific Heat = calories/g X degree's centigrade.  But on my test they weren't coming out correctly.  I did manage to get an 88% on the test despite all my math trouble.

Glad I still kept my chemistry books and notes. Ok,

Specific heat is the number of calories of heat needed to raise the temperature of 1 gram of the substance 1 degree Celsius.

Knowing the specific heat of the water or the aqueous solution along with the total number of grams of solution and the temperature increase, enables you to calculate the heat released during the reaction.

So if 0.050 mol of hydrochloric acid (HCl) is mixed with 0.050 mol of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) in a "coffee cup" calorimeter, the temperature of 1.00 X 10 to the second power grams of the resulting solution increases from 25.0 C to 31.5 C. If the specific heat of the solution is 1.00 cal/g H2O C, calculate the quanitity of energy involved in the reaction.

Answer is 31.5 C  -  25.0 C = 6.5 Celius

Now take the answer and plug it into the next part of the equation 1.00 X 10 to the second power g solution X 6.5 C X 1.00 cal

g solution C  = 6.5 X 10 to the second power cal or 0.65 kcal of heat energy was released by the acid-base reaction to the surroundings, the solution; the reaction is exothermic.

( the g solution and celius (C) cancels itself out with the other side of the equation leaving  calories.)

There is also a line defining the equation between 1.00 cal and g solution C.

I hope that helps, and not confuse you more.

Whoa... I guess I have this to look forward to when I sign up for Chemistry (again) in the Fall.  I mentioned earlier that I dropped the class. As if books don't cost enough money, I bought a book from Borders called Chemistry for Dummies for $20.  It did help me in the beginning when I first started but haven't picked the book back up since I dropped the class.  Supplemental book(s) on the subject might help in addition to doing the practice exercises in the text book.  The answers are usually posted in the back.  Tutoring is also an option if they offer it during the summer at your college.

I may be asking mramsey40 for some help too later.      :     ]

Will help anyone out that I can. Besides my A&P books, Microbiology, my chemistry I kept just because I seem to have to keep referring to it all the time.  It can be really confusing. Don't be afraid to ask questions, I guarantee you, there will be at least a half a dozen other people that are just as confused as you. Study groups are great as well, I loved mine because we were able to pick each others brains when one concept was a total mystery. Good luck to everyone!

Thanks mramsey, what I wasn't doing was subtracting the two temps.  Duh!!  Thanks for your help and all of your input.  Chemistry is really hard.  We are doing mole conversions right now with some stoichiometry (now if that word doesn't scare you).  I just got that figured out two days before the test.  It is very hard.  I ask my teacher questions, but after asking him 5 times on the same thing and still being confused, there is something definately wrong there.  My school just got the tutor this past week and I have used her already, but now there is only 31/2 weeks left of school.  But better late than never I suppose.

Sinimin, yeah, I looked at that book to at Barnes and Noble.  It gave some good info on chemistry itself, but the math wasn't as helpful to me.  Since I have had some chemistry in Biology it has helped me with the basics and concepts, but it's just the darn math that is kicking my butt.  I have used some videos on youtube.

Mramsey, what do you use your chem book for now?  I am keeping all my books just for that very purpose.  I did use some chemistry in my biology class and I am sure I will be for my other science classes since they say chemistry is the basis for all science.

We should start a study group on this website. I start my Chemistry class on Aug 18th! YIKES! I haven't taken chem since high school, about 8 years ago.

Work is pretty slow today so I thought I would brush up on some of the chemistry principles. Check this site out:

http://chemistry.about.com/od/generalchemistry/u/basics.htm

Let me know if it helps.

Use it for stuff like this. Remembering how to do conversions and just because I am a terrible packrat!   One suggestion when asking questions to the teacher is have him write it out on the board step by step, maybe that way you can see what you may be missing and it may make him slow down a bit. Good luck!

I am actually getting this stuff now.  Now that the class is almost over, but better late then never.  I do not recommend taking Chemistry in the summer, however, it depends on the teacher.  It just is too fast and it's just not enough time to understand anything.  But with the right teacher it may be different.  A girl in my class is still confused about the first few chapters so she is really lost.  She is just hoping she passes it, but she isnt making any real effort.  Can't be a nurse if you don't put effort into your classes.

You know, I take that back.  I am getting the math part of it.  I just took a test on Wednesday and thought I did good on it, but found out I got a 79% because just before the test the teacher was reviewing for the test and confused us all.  No one did that great on it and everyone was feeling pretty good about it too.  what does that tell ya?

Main thing I can tell all that are taking chemistry is to work the problems at the end of the chapters and if you can get a hold of the solutions manual for your chemistry book, that is really helpful because it shows the problems from the book and how to break them down. It really helps when you keep making the same mistake and have'nt figured it out yet! (Gee, I wonder who has done that?   ) Really work on it because for the ones that will be going for their bachelors, you will have to take organic chemistry. More interesting, but the math is from this portion. Good luck to all and holler if you need help! Going camping tomorrow and will be back on line Thursday night or Friday.

Thanks mramsey, I do have the solutions manual and have used that many many times.  I have basically tuned out the teachers lectures since he just confuses me even more.  I just go home and read the book and use the internet to figure it out on my own.  We are now into the last three chapters for beginning Chem.  Solutions, acids and bases, and nuclear Chemistry.  Nuclear Chem scares me. I have to say that I am pretty proud of myself for getting a high B in the class, on my own.  I am a good teacher, lol!!   I have only three more days of class!!  Yay!!  Hopefully I can survive the next test which is Wednesday next week.  The stress is about to kill me!!

I have a fiance that is very supportive.  I am surprised he is still around after all the stuff I have thrown at him.  He has a way of calming me down and getting me through the tough stuff.  If I didn't have him I might have just quit.  If any man can put up with me right now he is a saint!!  LOL!

OMG..........I'm so glad all that is over. I wasn't a FAN of chemistry.

Your professor will MAKE or BREAK you. I had a decent guy so that helped a lot.

Good luck to you and to all the pre nursing students that are yet to take chemistry. Don't let it take over you.

Thanks mramsey!  I wouldn't say a chem geek.  I don't ever want to see it again.  LOL!  Yeah onto the hard stuff, I am taking A&P this fall, but I am actually looking forward to it since the teacher is awesome.  The nursing program will be much harder than anything in my prereq's.  But I embrace that challenge!!

I begin on the 22nd of this month. Going this week to pick up books and PDA is on its way. Looking forward to getting back into school. Finishing up summer projects now and looking forward to fall. Good luck to all this semester!

I really loved chem.  I got an 89.9.  I would love to help, conversions are pretty easier, it always goes in 10's if you have the basics like cm, km and that stuff, its easy I need something more concrete to help.  I just hated the lab where you had to make stuff.  Its cool to look at a benzene ring, alcohol, amide, amine and know what they are talking about, especially when you speak of omega's and amino acids.

Just let me know.

Well, I'm getting a C grade right now.  It's tough if I don't practice at it.  My teacher (he's a really good one) says that it's a lot of little stuff but it's also a lot of info to remember and keep straight.  I'm not great with conversions (measurements).  I definitely need to do more exercises on my own time.  The homework isn't enough sometimes.

I took my mid-term last week.  The highest grade earned in the class was a B.  We're working on balancing equations right now and gram to mole conversions.  Luckily, I have an awesome lab partner.

Sighhh... two more months to go.

It is hard, but if I could do it anyone can.  I am horrible at math, but I taught myself the math.  I am so proud of myself for getting through it.  I used youtube and some university websites to help me out with the math.  Also hit up lunarcaustic.  He was a great help!

Chemistry wasn't too bad for me. We needed a C+ to pass. If I remember right, I got a B. When you get into the nursing classes you'll learn a lot more about acids and bases.  If you think chemistry is hard...............you ain't seem nothing yet. LOL

Good luck everyone.
