What Are Your Thoughts On Organ Donation?

Hey all,

I just read the Nursinlink article, "Our Boy's Death Has Saved 5 Lives." It got me thinking about whether or not people should be organ donors. Organ donation can indeed save lives, which is amazing. But, how do you feel about the people waiting in line for donations who never receive any? And what about organ harvesting? What are your thoughts?

Every specific part of the body that is able to be donated (corneas, bone marrow...etc) has its own criteria as far as medical history, age, the event that caused the death, etc that either includes or excludes it from being usable.  Early discussion with family members regarding the wishes for donation are integral.

I think organ donation is a great thing, actually I am an organ donor myself. I wish more people would become organ donors. Unfortunately there is the myth that if you are critically ill or injured and you're an organ donor medical professionals won't even try to save your life so your organs can be harvested. I can't tell you how many times people tell me that when I ask if they are or would like to be an organ donor.

I am an organ donor. I had a friend  who had received both kidneys and a pancreas. She recently passed away. She was a very bad diabetic. Before the transplants she was on daily dialysis in her home. The organs she received enabled her to live a better quality of life and extended her life by about 7 years. I know her daughter and husband are extremely grateful for organ donors. I remember when they were on the waiting list. They had a pager and had to stay in the range of the pager. It was a very hard time for them.

I am 100% in favor of organ donation.  My aunt received a new liver about 25 yrs ago (she passed away 3 yrs ago from other complications).  The couragous decision of the  young man that donated his organs gave my aunt 10 yrs she would not have had if she did not have transplant.  Yes the meds she had to take caused some side effects but she was able to live a full life.  I am so much for donation that I am a donar myself and if anything ever happened to my boys I would be honored to donate.

I too am an organ donor.  I have a very strong family history of PKD (polycystic kidney disease).  I have it too, but have not been formally diagnosed - as my physician was afraid that it may affect my future chances with insurance eligibility.  I am healthy, eat right, and take good care of myself.  Most of my family has HTN secondary to the PKD, but I am the only one with HYPOtension!  ANy oragan's that can be harvested from my body that can prolong the life of another will gladly be given...besides, I won't need this body when I go meet my maker!

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up, worn out and screaming "Woo-hoo"!!!

I am also an organ donor.  I am a supporter of educating the need for people to donate.  Yes alot of organs are unuseable but the ones that are used and can be transplanted save lives of many.  I am not going to be needing any part of my body when I died so they can have whatever will help save or prolong the life of someone else.

I think organ donation is wonderful. They save so many precious lives and will continue to do so in the near future. I will definitely be donating my organs once I am gone from this earth...I won't need them anyway!
