I really need some work advice. I have a lot of LTC experience. I have trouble getting jobs because of this. I'm a LPN. I'd like to work corrections or the med-surg in a hospital. Any advice is welcomed. I've only been a nurse 2 years.

Just keep applying places. You will luck out and someone will not look at your experience as "she ONLY have LTC experience" and say "wow, she is able to handle taking care of a lot of patients at one time and can supervise others BECAUSE of her LTC experience".

Hi,

I work at my state's psych facility and we are on the same grounds as the federal correctional facility as well.  A lot of the nurses go between the facilities even though one is dept of corrections and the other is dept. of health and social services. And i know that one of our requirements is a least one year experience at a LTC facility.  You dont generally need a ton of experience to work at the dept. of corrections.  I dont know what state you live in, but try the website and apply.  Any state or federal job can take some time, just because of the "system" and the process.  Make sure and find out if you are taking all the steps to get them your application as well.  If you put in a paper application at our state facililty you may never get called because they do everything on computer, yet they still hand out paper applications.  Good luck and keep trying!

Don't get discouranged, just keep applying for these positions that you are seeking and the door will soon be opened to you. Some hospitals, especially the larger ones, like to hire people who have a little more experience to avoid having to train in a fast paced envirnonment. Keep an open mind to smaller hospitals/clinics for experience while you are waiting for the dream job to come around. And it will...we NEED nurses...desperately!

Best of hopes to you!
