What do you think of medical marijuana? Should it be legalized? Is marijuana helpful to those who may suffer a severe illness?

Great post...this one's a toughie! I'm on the fence about it. On the one hand I think it's a legitimate help to those who have no other option for pain relief, within certain guidelines. On the other hand I see no way of regulating it so that it doesn't fall into the hands of non- patients and I have a concern about other people being around the second-hand smoke. Then again, people get Rx's like Oxycontin and it's common knowledge that it gets into the hands of people it wasn't prescribed for.

There is a legal medication called Marinol (SP?).  I've given it to pt's.  It contains the chemical component of marijuana that prevents nausea.  I've given this to chemo pt's in the past.  I don't think having a cancer pt smoke, when the medication is legally available in a pill form,  Unless of course, your just smoking to get high!  Having said that I know there are other 'medical' reasons for pot.  But for each of those medical reasons, there is a legal, legit, tested alternative.  At this point, my vote is against legalization, unless there is some profound evidence to show that it isneeded.

Marinol does not do the same thing to most people that smoking marijuana does.  I know some people first hand that do use it to help several different things.  N/V, appitite, pain, headache are only some of the effects it has.  It also, as you know, will relax and calm some people. I do see that some people do believe that it is harmful and it may very well be but, it has been used for many many years for treatments for different things.  I do know that, if a person uses pot for medicinal reasons and they are on the liver transplant list, they will not receive consideration for transplant because it is considered an addictive drug and it is believed that those individuals will return to the ways the caused the original liver failure.  For the most part, i do not see any reason to keep medical marijuana from those that do have a reason for its positive properties.

Very debateable topic.I,personally feel it should be used in certain instances. For example it can help with pain related to cancers, even help with appetite in those that do not have an appetite(not for priomary use tho ).I feel it would be hard to manage it on the streets. There are so many drugs people buy from each other, make counterfeit, even steal for.Under the right sircumstances, it would be helpful.
