Two years ago the facility I work for eliminated the LPN position on the night shift. And replaced that position with RNs . Now they are having a difficult time filling that position and want LPNs to work when there is no RN available. Can or should a LPN replace an RN ? Isnt that working out of liscence. Or beyond the scope of the liscence.?

Yeah it is - pretty much all states have completely separate licenses for LPNs and RNs. This is happening more and more due to nursing shortages all over but it's no excuse you should report it to the state board. They need to know how desperate the situation is!!

The facility is claiming that it is an emergency. The problem is there is a RN supervisor making that decision. Seems to me that the supervisor is the one who should step in and take over. I have asked the board of nursing for an opinion on this matter.

I am signed up them, and so far I havent had any problems with them. Just contact your state board of nursing to find out which school they will accept.

Yes, it is and so is the College Network. It is very expensive. I went through The College Network for my degree from Excelsior College. It would be cheaper to go to the source or which ever university you want your degree from. That way you aren't paying twice for your degree.

Before you sign up with college network, check out your state universities or local community colleges. Many are now offering online classes and are far more economical than college network

College network just sells study guides. You can get all the resources you need from your online college without paying them too much money for not enuf value. You don't have to go thru College Network or Rue Education to enroll in Excelsior College, or any other online nursing school.

Another question regarding LPN vs RN, I have been asking a lot of both to suggest to me what they thought was best, and the answer was, to go for LPN first, get my foot in the door, get experience in the clinicals and find out just exactly what direction of the field I'd like to go, and then go for RN. I would like feedback on this opinion and some reasons or pros vs cons on this suggestion if you wouldn't mind. I would like to also hear your thoughts on this field vs the depression we are currently possibly facing and if you think that our field of employment might also decrease.

First of all, I suggest whichever one you choose you go into it with an open mind and make your career direction decision much later. Second, LPN positions I am VERY sad and unhappy to say in hospitals seem to be, in many areas, being phased out. Several new LPN grads have stated they can't find positions unless it's in LTC. I find this short sighted and reprehensible on the part of administrators, across the country. Our field of employment is usually not affected by depressions/recessions. People still become ill, need surgery, need care.
