I witnessed a surgical pt that experienced a discouraging bout of the hiccups over a period of days. We couldn't get to the bottom of it and I'm wondering if anyone else has any experience with this and what they did that actually helped. Thanks!

I've seen two pt's that got hiccups after surgery.  I was told that it was in response to intubation/sedation and not the actual surgery.  The one had it for about 3 days.  I think we gave thorazine, and that helped some, but eventually it did go away on its own

That stands to reason, doesn't it? I looked up thorazine and I see that one of it's indications is intractable hiccups. I'll tuck this away in my head in the event that it should ever come up again. Thanks kittyrn!

Many anesthesiologists and CRNA's will discuss this with a patient as a possible side affect of intubation.  It's quite a common occurence, particularly if the patient in question suffers from GERD or if not diagnosed has frequent heartburn
