Charles101,

A Psychiatric Nurse Practioner may work with any of the groups you listed, but their primary focus would be people sufferring from mental illness. They can have their own patients under supervison of an MD. They frequently work closely with family practice groups, neurology groups, and of course psychiatric groups. They can provide therapy, medication, and coordinate treatment for their patients. Nursing takes a more all encompassing or holistic focus on their patients-so while medication can be helpfull, the focus is on the whole person, and not just treating, put promoting optimum mental and physical health.

I hope this helps, if not, write back, and I will try again.

I work with the psych inmates in a very large county jail. I assess, diagnose and presribe. Basicly, I do every thing that thepsychiatrist does.

I enjoyed my clinical rotation in psych.

It takes a special "nurse" to work with psych patients in my opinion.

I got someone to sing who hadn't spoke in 5 years!

THe president of the hospital wanted to me with me.  I was honored.

Thanks CDNURSE.

I was proud of myself. It was an accomplishment for me and for the patient.
