Hey everyone!  I would like anyone's view on this.  I used to be the type of person which blood or other "gruesome" stuff didn't bother.  But lately, I have had a weak stomach when it comes to stuff like this.  I know in the nursing field I will experience times like that and would like to know if there is something I can do that will help.  I don't want to be able to take care of a patient because of my weakness.

LOL!  Girl if I am pregnant I am going to own a hospital.  LOL!  I can't have any more children - I had a complete hysterectomy in 2002 due to cervical cancer.

I have heard nurses say they used to get a weak stomach but they got used to the smells and other stuff.  Thanks for the suggestion.

My husband always laughs at me at movies.  I cringe, I jump, I cover my eyes, anytime something gross or bloody is on.  He said "how in the world can you stand to be a nurse, when you can't stand anything in the movies".  The fact of the matter is, when I'm actively involved in something, doing whatever, it doesn't bother me.  Having said that, I think every nurse has one 'special' thing that she really detests.  I detest strong fetid odors..  I've seen nurses lose it over resp. secretions, and still others that don't like packing wounds/decubs.  You just have to learn coping methods.  For me, if its really stinky, I wear a mask, or hold my breath.  It is especially hard when your pregnant!

There isn't a nurse alive, who hasn't at one time or another gotten into a situation and not felt queasy or lost it.  I love blood, guts and gore, which is why the OR was perfect for me.  However, there are times I've had to step back and away, even thrown up in a waste basket, turned around and continues to help.  This has always happened when I wasn't prepared with oil of wintergreen in my mask.  There are some bowel cases, that are so stinky and gross you just can't imagine it until you've experienced it.
