I was really not doubting myself but as the time approaches I am starting to think I am fooling myself.  I will be 56 when I finish, I can work hard all day, is it realy that physically demanding?   I know there is alot of work on your feet and I would have to be able to lift and sleep will be when I can get it, but shouldn't a healthy 56 year old male be able to handle the physical requirements?  I figure I have 20 good years left based on my genetics and then I will need to take it easy.  I have never been able to sit around and now work 7 days a week 5 at a desk job but the rest outside in the heat in South Carolina and also 2 to 3 hours every night.  I am looking forward to school but am a little concerned about all the memorization, I cant keep my kids names straight.

Any one have any similair experience that can help me from projecting the worst.

Just wanted to give my opinion as I am 49 and will graduate when I am 53!   Age is a reference point.....a man at your age could be stronger than someone 40 or even in their 30s.   The only way to really find out I guess is to jump in....I also read that if you work in the burbs the hospitals are less caotic aqnd busy ...also nursing homes...the biggest demand I don't think will be cracking a wipe at you but i'm just guessing here.    best to you in whatever you decide...ps don't let fear make the decision for you tho!

Use a lot of flash cards and memory association also take classes that teach study tools.   I'm worried about this too as my memory isn't great either...but if their is a desire we can overcome all obstacles I believe.

I am 46 and just started perquisites for nursing (1 yr of perquisites) After reading all these respondes it looks like alot of nurses started off in their late 40's. GOOD LUCK to all us starting a new career at 40/50ish! See you at the top!

Hi Everyone

I think I'm defintely the oldest in this group to date.  After 3 times trying to get in, I finally succeded.  I am now 61 years old.  My husband feels. "Have you totally lost your mind.?" starting at your age?   I tell him I didn't see in the requirements for entrance an age limit.  Besides, Oakland Community College in Michigan offers a 20% discount off tuition.  We have been married for 10 years as of October 10th.  I'm a bit sad to say.  It doesn't look like I'll get the moral support a husband should give and be truly proud of me.    Oh well, this justs makes me more determined to succeed.

You are only as old as you feel. I have a 88 year old father who lives with me. He plays on the internet for 4 hours a day, rides a bike everyday for 1 hour and he also still drives. He takes care of his apartment I have fixed for him in our basement. I on ther hand am  43 years old have been in the Medical field for 23 years at times I feel like I am 100 years old. I think sometimes the ocupation we do zaps us of our life source. It is also a state of mind.

Yes, you can handle the physical requirements. But also, you don;'t have to be a "hands-on" nurse forever.

After I graduated (age 43) I worked telemetry for only  6 months, then went into psych, where there is little physically demanding work (other than getting attacked now and then - LOL).

After one year of that I got into management and adminisatration, where I spent the rest of my career.

There are so many options in nursing. Besides, even the physical demands of hands-on nursing are not too much for a healthy person of your age.

Absolutely, I think age is merely a number.  I am 32 years old and have made the decision to make a career change.  The school accpeted my Liberal Arts courses from my first degree (Thank Goodness), so I just have to take the sciences before starting the clinical phase. I start on Jan 20th....(   I must admit that I am a bit nervous).  But I am determined to hit the ground running.

I am very happy that I came across this group.  I am looking forward to interesting discussions & helpful tips.

Well since my post about being concerned about going back to school I have completed one semester and am starting on my second.  I do have to study and I never miss classes but I ended up with a 4.0 last semester and am now taking AP II and Microbiology.  I have class 4 nights a week and still work full time at one job and part itme at another.  I love it, the courses are so stimulating and it is nice to know that my brain can still learn new things.  I am planning on retiring from my job in May and will hopefully get into an accelerated nursing program in June and have my clinicals completed in 15 months.  I had to even take my SAT's over again in Novemeber the last time was in 1969 but I ended up with a 1250, 50 points over what I needed in order to qualify for the accelerated program.

I guess my bottom line is "just do it" you will never know unless you try.
