Posted almost 5 years ago What do you think is the percentage of Med errors that go unreported? Are there any articles out there about this topic? |

Posted almost 5 years ago It's one of those things that there will probably never be an exact count on. I am sure it happens several times a day in one hospital.

Posted almost 5 years ago Are you talking about RN's or students (scary!!!)?

Posted almost 5 years ago I'm talking about nurses in general not students. Our instructors keep a accurate eye on all of the meds and procedures we do.

Posted almost 5 years ago Funny, a friend of mine told me in her surg rotation that she was supposed to administer a dose of insulin. Well my friend thought that there was a conflict with the dosage prescribed and asked the RN that she was working under if it was correct. The RN snapped at her and said you NEVER question the dr order! My friend then approached the instructor about the situation (ofcourse she have approached him anyways since the instructor has to observe us administer meds) and she didn't feel right about administering this particular amount of insulin. The instructor look at the chart and then went up to the RN with my friend and gave her the chart right back and told the RN to administer it herself cuz he was not involving his student in a med error. I was glad my friend stood up for herself cuz she is the kind of person that does what she is told. I never found out if the dosage was correct or not but my friend (the nursing student) and the instructor both agreed the dosage did not look right.

Posted over 4 years ago Wow that was interesting. I'm glad your friend was smart enough to question the doctors order. Our instructors tell us if something doesnt seem right to stop and question what you are doing and go to another RN etc for their opinion. I'd rather be snapped at by a doctor, nurse etc rather than give a potentially fatal med error. Tell your friend she did a good job catching the error!
