I hope that as an outsider looking in right now that I might be able to gain some wisdom from all of you. I am currently working through my pre reqs and some of my gen eds and will be applying to the ADN program this spring. I currently do not work in healthcare at all I am actually still stuck in hell (hell being the food service industry namely waiting tables) trying to pay for my education. I have decided in the last year to go into a healthcare related field. The list of positions and specialties go on and on and on.... I was wondering how many of you decided to go into your profession later in life rather than straight from high school to college? How on earth did you decide if it was really for you and how do you wiegh out all of the options to decide what to specialize in? Any advice would be more than greatly appriciated!!!

Old post but pertinent topic.  One of the good ways to get a look at nursing from an inside perspective is to get a CNA certificate and to work as a CNA.  Licensed nurses are required to know how to do CNA duties and must do them in addition to their exclusive duties in the absence of CNAs.

I was 28 when I started back to school. I had a 6 month old, 3 year old, and 6 year old. I finished when I was 31. Still ever learning. Not finished with my career goals yet. I am working on my own business as a nurse, but also not finished with school even now. I think getting focused on what it is you really want to accomplish will help with your course of education.

I graduated from nursing school at age 57 and am still going strong. Nursing is one profession that really knows no age limit.  I was the 5th oldest person in my class at the time.

Awesome John, I did not know that about you! I think sometimes when we are older in school, we are very focused!

I was also a waitress when I decided to go to school for nursing... I have been an active nurse for about a yr now and love it.  I think that I found out thats what I wanted to be when I grew up was after I had my daughter at 21...I am now 32 and still have about 2 yrs left of an ADN program and am thinking about getting my midwife degree... I think school is better for those of us who have been out of high school for a while.  Sometimes we seem to be the ones more focused on the work rather than socialization...

Good luck to you! I finished nursing when I was 30, and with three children. Keep focused on your goals and dreams!
