Hey ya'll,

What jobs have other students pursued to are currently working in while they are in their nursing program if they absolutely HAVE to work while in school.  PT or FT ???  Also what are the average hourly rates/salary for these?

Just trying to get a plan for the next two years

 Ciao,

Kate

Another job in addition to the cna is unit clerk. They do all the orders, answer phones, help Dr's get labs etc.It is a good way to learn the floor from another perspective and the skills you learn will ne helpful as a nurse. The hospital floors could not survive w/o the unit clerks.

I agree.  I was one it was called a unit secretary.  And the good thing about it is I could study on my downtime and if I had any questions I had 10 RN's and 2 doctors at my service.

My part-time job isn't in the MEDICAL field.

I work at Victoria's Secret when I have no school. During school I don't work because I want to stay focused and involved in my studies. I'm glad I'm able to do this while living at home still.

Hi Kate.  I totally understand about needing to work still while in the nursing program.  My guess is that the employer would need to be flexible yet pay somewhat decent especially if you have to pay for rent/mortgage, car loans, support children, etc.  I don't know how you would feel about applying for a shift position (an employer who is 24-hrs) where employees may work day, swing, or graveyard hours.

If I didn't work where I do now (Police Dept) I wouldn't know about applying for a Reserve Police Records Specialist position (non-career) that will work with nursing program hours.  However, a person in this job classification cannot work more than 1,040 hrs per fiscal year ; otherwise, the Dept would have to pay for the employee's medical/dental benefits.  An employee who works over 1,040 hours is considered full-time and then the Dept would have to provide benefits to the employee.  I also hope to volunteer at a hospital if time permits so that I can get some patient -contact experience.

A PRA  for Sac Police starts at $19.46 per hr. or $20K+ per year.  I would still have to apply for a loan and scholarships (fastweb) to make up what my household expenses are budgeted for.    Hopefully this gives you some ideas.  Good luck.

I wish I could help you, I worked full time and went to school.  I think that any retail job might be able to work with you and your schedule.  I did have a part time job for the first year of my college career, but I worked for a Doctor and she knew me since birth, so she was easy to work with.  Good luck, it is a challenge but most people can do it and get through it!

Work a nightshift, go to class during the, study in the evening, and then CRASH....you can do whatever you set your mind to.  I did it with kids...EMS school.  It was hard but I was determined to do it.

I actually work 40 hours a week (as a receptionist at a urologist office) with class and clinicals at night and on the weekends.  If you don't have to go this route...DON'T.  Find a job that you can work prn or part-time.  I actually am applying for a part - time job in the emergency dept as a secretary because it has become to be too much.  I live in northeast Ohio too.  Most secretarial jobs start around $12.

I worked as a private tutor while I was in the nursing school! It's very flexible because they require me to work during my free hours!

Call centers can be boring, but they are a great option for students. They offer flexible hours, and usually pay pretty well.
