Posted almost 5 years ago Our hospital just upgraded our system. We have to sing ourselves in and out of the system at the beginning and end of our shift. We assign our portable phone number, our pt's.The call light goes directly to the Nursing assistant w/ the nurse as back up.Pt's can always call directly also via telephone.I ,personally do not like the idea of just anyone calling us at any time on our phones, as this can be a hindrance. But, that goes into another can of worms...

Posted almost 5 years ago we carry phones on our floor, but, the patient still has to use the call light, the monitor tech finds out what they need, if possible, and then calls the appropriate person, either the nurse or the aid. It is a hassle but it sure beats jumping up and answering every light just to find out that they accidently rolled over on the call light.

Posted almost 5 years ago We use Vocera. It is a small phone that you call using your voice. I can call anywhere and receive calls from anywhere but only if I am in the hospital because that is the only place the antennae are. It is ok but it is voice activated and has it draw backs because of that. They use Vocera in the t.v. show- "Hopkins".

Posted almost 5 years ago The patient uses the call light and the assigned NA, LPN, or RN responds. Phones are used on our floor also. The phones are used to transfer calls regarding the patient to the appropriate nurse or to locate a nurse. It's also important as a form of quick communication to notify staff of a code or rapid response need. I had clinicals at a facility that used a pager system. When a call light was pressed, the corresponding NA receiving a page as to the room that required assistance.
