I recently read an article about a Music Therapist in a children's hospital who plays music for (or with) patients who are suffering from terminal illnesses. It seems that these kids really respond to it. Do you believe that alternative therapies like this have a tangible affect on patients? Do you try and practice alternative therapy with your patients (meditation, aroma-therapy, massage, etc)? If so, do you see results?

Should America embrace alternative therapy? Are we relying too heavily on medicine?

We are so quick to shove pills down out patients. Music therapy and pet therapy are so effective that there is not enough room here to praise them. I ahve seen both of them work miracles.

Alternative therapies should be embraced by the medical community- its amazing to watch vital signs improve on patients when the therapy dogs come on our units...and we have all seen the power of simple distraction when starting IV's or giving injections.

I did pet therapy with my greyhounds. I had one patient in LTC who quit speaking when his wife died. I took Jake in and for the first time in 3 months he spoke. It is amazing what the animals can do for patients.

I agree alternative therapies are underutilized.Passing out a pill or givingĀ  iv pain medsĀ  is to easy.I wish there was alot more relaxation and other treatments to use for pain.It doesn't seem as tho the U.S. is too keen on other options
