Hello all!  I am an LPN and have been working in LTC for a little over a year.  Well, there are evidently still some things I need to learn but I was wanting to find out something.  I got an order from an MD the other day and it was for Kaopectate 30cc po tid X 3days. Well someone a while back had told me that was the same thing as Pepto.  Well I gave Pepto for 2 of those days. Well it comes to find out that when i had came in the next day to work on a different hall that the nurse to the hall with that order said she could not find the Kaopectate but there was a whole bottle of Pepto in the drawer.  I was like uh-oh.  I've been giving the wrong med to this lady who had very bad diarrhea.  Pepto is for that but still. I just feel really bad. Can Pepto be interchanged with Kaopectate?

Thanks

No, it is not interchangeable.Kaopectate is specifically for diarrhea, while pepto will help, but it's not the main function and doesnt work as well as.
