Posted almost 5 years ago Where do you live? there is a nursing shortage so do not let the "experienced" in the ad scare you off. Many times that is only what the employer HOPES to find. With the shortage, they most likely will not always get what they want. You have two things going for you that many new grads will not have. maturity and a male. Use both to yur advantage when going for a job. Also, because you are a male, you could be taken advantage of. (strong back) DDo not let that happen to you. Despite the news about nursing shortage, there are some areas where there is not a shortage. Check out everything in your area and no what you may be up against and what is in your favor.

Posted almost 5 years ago I've been a nurse 25 years, and CD is right - do NOT get taken advantage of (strong back); it happens a lot. No dobt you have other life experiences that will contribute to your overall success as a professional nurse - use that to your advantage as well. NEVER sell yourself short.

Posted almost 5 years ago Look for an externship or apprenticeship (depends on the state) that should be offered by one of the hospitals were you will do your clinicals. If there is any way you can fit it in, DO IT! This is the "little extra" experience the recruiters look for that will put you in the front of the "competition". According to my recruiters, even with the 14 years as an EMT, the 10 months I spent as a Nurse Extern in the ER put me in the front and gave me a choice of first jobs. Being a male is a plus, not just size and strength. I have an autistic grandson who will listen to a male voice over a female voice any day, (same with some psych pts. ;-) !) just one example of why a diverse unit works. Enjoy your new career. (By the way I was two weeks from 50 when I graduated)
