Hi everyone I'm ayesha. I'm a new rn fresh out of nursing school. I'm interested in what type of insurance do some of you guys have to protect yourselves in case you get sued. I need to know prices and how fast it can be activated.

Thanks

http://www.nso.com/  gives you rates state by state and it is activated almost immediately  This is what I have and have had for 33 years

I also have nso and have had it since I started nursing. And it's not too expensive. New nurses get a discount the first year, if they apply within the first year of nursing.

Funny how things change.  I had to have malpractice insurance in college, while doing nursing clinicals.

I am still in nursing school and since I stated clinicals last year I have needed to carry the malpractice insurance. Because I am a student it's very cheap. I only paid $22 for the whole year.

Wonder what the price will be once I graduate and become a RN?

My insurance now is $98. a year. NSO gives you a discount the first year for new grads if you get it within your first year. I'm thinking it was either $50. or $75. I can't remember.

I just got my NSO policy and it was $49.00 for 1st year grad rate. Regular rate is only $100.00 a year for 1,000,000/6,000,000 worth of coverage. I checked out several companies and none came close to this. I am not endorsing any company just some info that I have. I hope we never have to use it but it sure gives a little peace of mind.

Right now as a nursing student we get insurance through the college. We pay each school year.

At a recent education session one of our local lawyers asked the question "How many of you carry your own malpractice Insurance?" majority of hands were raised to which the attorney replied "thank you, its easy money for me". When questioned he informed us the majority of nurses who are named in lawsuits are protected by their hospitals policy unless the nurse is "grossly negligent" and that if you carry your own insurance then they'll go after your policy because the majority of carriers will quickly settle.- Food for thought....

I've been told the same think kaya, but then went to a different education program and told the opposite particularly if one has assets such as a home.  So just to cover my proverbial buttocks, I keep it.

I was always told the same as kayakarn.  Most hospital's are required to cover you...they hired you.  Hence, this is why most hospitals do drug screens, orientation, mandatory trainings....... I've only carried insurance for a 4 year span of almost 19 years.
