Last year I gained 16 lbs in nursing school.  All that pizza, cola, and coffee caught up with me.  It taken me the whole summer to work it off.  Has anyone else gained weight from nursing school?  Does anyone have advice to offer about keeping healthy while hitting the books?

I too gained weight while I was in nursing school, and I think pretty much most do. I hear it called the freshman 15. The first time I heard this I didn't know what it was, and found out it's "You gain 15 pounds the first year." LOL Unfortunately I guess it's true.

No advice on losing it or keeping it off though while in school. I waited until I was finished and then lost it.

That sucks.  I am not looking forward to that.  I have gained some weight just doing my prereq's.  My problem is when I get bored or stressed I eat.  So what I have been doing is just staying at school and studying in the library so I am not tempted to go to the fridge.  Now, the school has food, but I don't bring any money or cards with me so that helps.  I bring my own lunch (something healthy) and then I am not starving by the time I get home.

I have gained way too much because of sitting and studying and eating without thinking. I am back into the YMCA and when I study, I put out the veggies and veggie dip or ranch to munch on instead of chips and stuff.

Yes, the freshman 15 does happen because freshman have found freedom in staying up late, eating junk and not exercising. I think the key to keeping the weight gain is to have healthy alternatives to do, when stressed. You can still take a hike and bring your notecards along to study in nature, you can eat smaller portions and find healthy alternatives to stress relief. Unfortunately, I was one of those people that did all the bad stuff and now at 29, i am just trying to lose all the pounds i put on in college. And since nursing can be a very stressful job, it's important to find a healthy routine now and stick with it! Because when you exercise you feel good about yourself and you are not only happier with yourself, you are happy to be around! Even if it's 15 minutes, I try to take a walk for a break before I head for the junk food and I drink lots of water! It's a decision to make and we have to take care of ourselves first before we can tell people to take care of themselves!

It 's funny I would read this post. This past weekend I was speaking with a few pre-med students and they were talking about the weight gain due to studying. I've tried to prepare myself before I began my class in a week.  I'm a junk food eater so, I knew it was important to get healther snacks being I woudl be staying up later to study. I would recommend the 100 calories snacks as well as yogurts, veggies and fruits. Try to prepare your meals or snacks ahead of time so, you will not be tempted to buy/get foods that are unhealthy. Instead of soda, get crystal light to add to you water if you need flavor.  I don't leave home without two in my purse. I have a box of 10 at home and a box  at work . I've also purchased vitamins, B12, Coq12 and Omega-3. These vitamins are supposed to be good for energy along with other benefits.

I hope this helps!

At least you know what the culprit is. I've found snacking while studying helps me get focused. Cheetos puffs rocks! As long as I get the grades I want and finally become a nurse .I don't care what my weight will be eventually after the fact. I'll deal with that issue later.  I'd rather be fat than not be a nurse.

I am trying really hard not to gain weight in school.  My schedule is varied every day and I've gotten off the strict regimen that I was on before.  I still try to eat healthy.  I pack my lunch on the days that I'll be at school or clinical all day.  I still drink water or diet soda.  If I don't have time to cook, I don't eat pizza or hamburgers-I eat cereal or oatmeal or something like that.  It's till hard, though, but no one ever said nursing school was gonna be easy, and I guess that includes our diets!

Thanx for all your input you guys.  I'm definitely making smarter choices with my meals and snacks and trying to get my walks in daily.  Another thing that has helped me is I have told my classmates that I study with that I'm in a weight loss program and they have not only give me support but are making better choices with me.  Thanx for all your support!  I hope this thread helps everyone else that's going thru the same issue as I am.

Okay I know I'm a guy but still!!! I gained 85lbs. when I went through school! My biggest problem was the fact grabbing a fastfood where and there + not being able to hit the gym + stress + 28 women in my class (someone ALWAYS had candy or homemade cookies) + working the night shift!! I have started to get back to the gym and eating "right".  Also I think when I go back to school I'm takeing haelthy snacks like fruit to snack on instead of all the candy and cookies!!

Just an update, I plateaud from Sep to NOv and have recently started to lose again with exercise.  Ofcourse its a lot slower than I did in the summer but I'll take it.  I have 3 classmates, 2 male and 1 female, that have lost a significant amount of weight and look awesome!  I figured that if they could do it, so can I. Its funny cuz when I saw them and they told me that they just ate healthy and exercised daily, I started to do the same and am losing agian.  I am 30 yrs old and have been overweight since I was 22.  I am ready to at a healthy weight going into this decade and want to be positive role model not only for my children but for my patients.  I'm a big believer that what we eat affects our health.  How can I promote nutrition if I am not following the same advice.  Good luck to you all and I hope I can update in a month or few with progress.  Good luck with your studies!

I have my day scheduled out from the time I wake up to the time I go to bed and of course all my study times.  I look at my schedule as I would a job.  I get up about 6:30, hit the gym at 7am come home eat and get ready for school which starts at 9:30, etc.  It really helps because if I just winged it I don't think I would be as motivated.  Although most days I am not motivated to get up at 6:30 and go exercise, but I force myself too.  Plus it helps your brain if you work out.  Plus I have been doing the Zone diet and it helps with studying so much.  A good diet does the brain good!!  And my brain needs all the help it can get!

Since starting school in April, I have probably gained about 20 pounds, I really don't have alot of time to cook or exercise, so I eat alot of fast food unfortunately.
