Nursing Shortage

Posted over 4 years ago Hello, my name is Robert and I'm a twenty year old nursing student from Mesa, Arizona. I've been wanting to be a nurse since I was sixteen years old. I have great compassion and patience for people, I'm smart and efficient, and that's why I think I'm going to be a great nurse. Besides having a strong desire to help people, I also want to have a career that makes good money. I have heard from three doctors in the past year that when the nursing shortage is over in maybe fifteen or twenty years that since the demand for nurses will be met, their pay and benefits will decrease. I was wondering if anyone had an opinion on that? I'd appreciate your comments. |

| Posted over 4 years ago Personally I think those three doctors are idiots. The current statistics according to what I've read is the average nurse is around 43-45 years old. In twenty years, even more will be retiring. Colleges can't keep up with the demands of educating Professional nurses. Most have at least a 2 year waiting period. This isn't going to change anytime soon. |

Nursing shortages go through cycles. This is not the first nor will it be the last shortage. When there is a shortage, like now, nursing schools are flooded with applicants. Then, the field is flooded and nurses cannot buy jobs. Just ask any of the older nurses who have been through this before. The doctors are correct. It has happened over and over. Check out the history of nursing shortages. |
