Hello,

Recently my 5yr old experienced both of these potentially fatal diseases. She is surviving both, thus far. None the less if you have ever encountered either of these syndromes they are quite devastating to all. It seems however that the reason she fared as well as she did was not only the excellant care she recieved (her favorite nurse was 'ballarina nurse" (she is a ballroom dancer) but also because her diet was phenominally great. what do you think of the relationship of medicine and certain foods that contain chemicals specifically to help a certain aspect of the illness as well as not interfereing with the drugs?

Hi monicalucia - sorry to hear about your five-year old. Here is a new training article on Stevens-Johnsons Syndrome.

Wow, my five year old daughter had Henoch Scholein Purpura too! It eventually cleared up, but I can understand how stressful this must have been for you. She is also diagnosed with PDD ( pervasive developemental disorder) which is a mild form of autism. I have heard of links between diet and autism but this is the first time I heard of a link between hsp and diet. what sort of foods were incorporated into your childs diet? I am interested to hear more about this topic.

Hi,

kudos to you for taking care of you little one!..
Tto improve my daughters chance of survival and minimal dicomfort..I focused on the immune building food groups...These foods are also known to improve health for cancer patients.
She really I mean really ate 5-7 helpings a day of fruits and veggies. I worked out a diet so that the chemical compounds would work with her where she needed it most...First...spinach, this is an A+ in immune building compounds...and makes the blood strong it helps keep a better balance of red vs. white. other favorites for her were broccoli, italian broccoli(broccoli rabe). Dandelion greens along with carrots are the only veggies to help the kidney and directly the liver. As you may know the Henoch Scholein Purpura effects the kidneys and worse case causes renal failure...HSP is a syndrome that takes up to several years to leave the body..

There are other recipes and foods that also help...I'm working on a guide for families that have children with HSP..best advice I could give is to stay away from overprocessed food...to many chemicals can cause a reaction with hypersensitive HSP kids or SJS kids or adults.

I had never heard of this disorder before. Is it becoming more common? It seems like more people have had experience with it than I originally thought.

yes, This is becoming more common one culprit is overuse of antibiotics.. and potentially in some because of the pre processed foods in our diets. Our bodies dont have the strength to fight these types of reactions off because lets face it how many of us really have a balanced diet...it takes as much time to plan a healthy way of eating as it does to train for any goal you might have. It is not impossible however to do. I like to refer to this as a work in progress and to be flexible throughout in terms of eating habits. End result is that the strains of viruses as well as bacterial infections are becoming resiliant. It is the proverbial rock and a hard place.

Don't know, and will probably NEVER know, if the SJS that I experienced was from Lamictal. SJS is a rare, but NOT TO BE TAKEN LIGHTLY side effect of Lamictal. Or, was what I experienced SJS from Lamictal overlapping with Depakene?

The two when taken together, can, in some instances result in a pretty severe reaction-including a nasty rash; I entered the hospital with a temp of 106, nearly incompatible with life. Or were the ulcers mimicking SJS?

teamRN.

Thanx for the advice MonicaLucia. My daughter refuses to eat veggies unless their in soup so I will find a way to get her to eat the particular ones. I had never heard of HSP until my daughter had it. Also her label of Autism was just lifted by the school because she has caught up to speed with the areas that she was behind in. I guess the Autism label was a way to get her approved to be in a therapeutic class. I believe the cross between therapy and changing her diet at home has made a difference for all of us. My mother is very suspicious of vaccines, processed foods and gluten as causes for Autism. We eat at home, versus eating out and consume minimal gluten. However she is finicky with veggies. Thanx for your advice and good luck with your daughter too! I hope all the best for her and mine as well.
