Reading these discussion topic comments makes me realize just how dedicated and altruistic most nurses are.  I just know that the collective power we could wield as a more unified professional body would be substantial... that is why I am an avid supporter of the initiative to create an Office of the National Nurse.  An ONN would be a beginning.. and it would send a lot of positive messages... a prominent and visible nurse in Washinton, who's primary role would be to shift our nation to be focused on prevention, would serve nursing well.  But most importantly, it would serve our society well also.  We have a political window of opportunity opening now.

The growing epidemics of preventable diseases are a target nurses know how to confront!  Nurses have collectively earned the public's trust.  Nurses understand how to convey health messages effectively, and also, nurses can assess client understanding, they are non-judgemental and can accept clients where they are.  Nurses, for all these reasons, are a valuable existing resource...and with  a National Nurse to nationally  inspire prevention efforts, nurses will significantly contribute to local efforts in every community.  Visit the NNNO website at www.nationalnurse.org  to see the many nursing organizations that concur and have already endorsed this effort.  A National Nurse for prevention is a practical concept. It will strengthen exisiting prevention networks, and will enhance the public perception of professional nurses.  A National Nurse will actively advocate for better health outcomes, highlight nursing issues and support enhanced funding for nursing education. ...And that may be only the beginning... Trust in the power of nurses to make changes...I recommend that anyone who doubts that look at nursing history.... I am a third generation RN who has just retired after 40+ years in nursing... and I am a believer in the potential of nurses to lead change...once again!!  The time is now, let's hold hands and get started.

I believe in taking care of my own and will always stand firm to take care of one of my fellow nurses.  I would love to know more about this and have always wanted to get into politics not just to stand for my fellow nurses but to also protect the rights of our patients.  I live in the TN area and we have no support that I am aware of other than the TN nursing Ass. .  Thanks for the connection.
