I've been an ANA member for 25 years, and I've enjoyed their literature and CE material, but for the life of me I don't know what they do for nurse advocacy. Does anyone have any long-lasting experiences with the ANA? What have they been advocating lately?

I gave up on ANA a long time ago. You can get the AJN without the membership for far less. I think much has to do with how strong the state chapter is. It was poor in Georgia. Not been in NV long enough to know. I joined the speciality groups. American Psychiatric Nurses Assocaition and International Society of Nurses on Addictions.

Thanks cdnurse - why did you give up on the ANA?

I could not figure out what they do for the members. Also they had kind of a snobby attitude. I gave them more than one chance. I thought the membership dues were too expensive.

It's funny to read this stuff on the ANA, since I just started nursing school 2 weeks ago (which is why I haven't spent much time here). The instructors seem to like the ANA, and we have to know all they do for the first exam. Any more "dirt" on the ANA? I'm curious.

My instructors all pushed ANA as well. The Student Nurses Association (SNA) is great. Again, I think your best bet is with the specialty nursing organizations.

Interesting - what about the state-level ANA organizations? Do they seem to have the same kinds of attitudes?

I'm not aware of a whole heck of a lot; I'm a writer, but they avoided me like the plague; won't really talk to me sinnce I'm a member of the ANA. Almost sounds like they want me to join on "blind faith."

I was able to get one position statement from them once; but that was hard to come by.
